So, just ignoring that this is based off a Marvel property? Well done, Disney.

My favorite part about Big Hero 6 is they couldn't find Japanese-American actors to play the Japanese characters.

Technically, it's a Disney property now, since Disney owns Marvel Comics.
Ryan Potter [Hiro Hamada] is half Japanese. Last edited by Great Rumbler on Tue Jul 15, 2014 2:38 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Yes. They made it quite clear in their press statements that they were leaving the MCU alone. (And besides, Sunfire and Silver Samurai already tied up at Fox.)
It's not Japan, it's San Fransokyo. (Which accounts for the occasional California accents.) Last edited by EricJ2 on Tue Jul 15, 2014 2:51 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Rumbler: Yeah, I just got owned on a different thread about that. Once again, my bad.
So I'll just add that I noticed there's a Mazinger pic at the end of the trailer. |

Doesn't matter in animation. By that logic, a good half of the Japanese version of Code Geass fails as no-one is American/British. |

I am really not trying to sound pretentious, but the whole "Disney is a bunch of racist ingrates" has to stop. I am not defending Disney or its past mistakes with racial insensitivity in any way, but Disney has had more diversity in their films than people give them credit for. Should they have more diversity? Yes, of course, but saying they have had none, especially in the last 20 years is an outright lie. I know a small minority is pissed off that Disney changed some of the characters ethnicities in their adaptation of Big Hero 6, which in all honesty the majority of people probably never heard of before Disney announced the project. For those who don't know the original Big Hero 6 is based in Japan with characters of mainly Japanese ethnicity.
Plus, Disney has hired voice actors of varying ethnicities for decades. Ironically, when the infamous "PC Police" criticized Disney for lack of people of color in Frozen...which takes place in 19th century Netherlands (and had varying ethnicities during the coronation)...when in fact the character of Kristoff, is a member of the Sami people, who are native nomad people from the Netherlands, and as a kid he was voiced by Tyree Brown (Jabbar Trussell-Braverman from NBC's Parenthood). Again, this is taken out of context, but I still believe it can be applied here:
That is completely racist, and that doesn't solve the issue of minorities not being represented in Hollywood. What Disney has done now is give us our first bi-racial lead, and changed a few character's ethnicities to fit into the story's new setting. No one complained when Nick Fury, a character who for decades was Caucasian, was portrayed by Sam Jackson, and to have more continuity, Furry's "race" was changed in the comics as well. But when Disney does it, it's the revival of the Third Reich. Is there a bias of having Asian characters in Hollywood, you bet'cha, and we should keep fighting the good fight, but this isn't complete whitewashing like The Last Airbender so let's not even go there. Sorry for this long rant. Oh and as for why no Marvel Logo, it comes now to a few reasons. 1) It is not actually made by Marvel Studios, yes Disney owns Marvel, but other than being a "money funnel," Disney doesn't actually run Marvel. Big Hero 6 is being made by Disney Animation Studios, so its better to associate their product from two of their own studio's biggest hits. 2) The Disney Logo doesn't appear on the Marvel films they distribute, so why should Marvel appear on their products. Marvel and Disney are two separate brands, that happen to be owned by the same corporation. At this point since Disney owns Marvel, they don't have to pay for the rights, so think of Big Hero 6 as public domain within their company, which most of Disney's movies originate from Public Domain sources. 3) Disney and Marvel have no intention of adding these characters to the Cinematic Universe, so why have the association to confuse people. Anyway I hope they bring the manga over here! Last edited by lemursrule on Tue Jul 15, 2014 6:03 pm; edited 7 times in total |

(And if we're talking Transformers 4, we could upgrade that to "You better darn well BELIEVE it ", but not quite in the context you had in mind...) |

I am so pumped up! After watching the new latest trailer, Big Hero 6 is my most highly anticipated movie coming out this fall! Can't wait to see it!
As for the manga tie in, I hope Disney decides to bring it over here and it would be funny if Marvel decides to publish it here like they did with the original Big Hero 6 comic they did a long while ago. |

Hate to break it to you, but Netherlands doesn't have anything that can be described as mountains, nor are Sami from the Netherlands. What made you think they were from the Netherlands...? They're Lapland people. The film is inspired by Norway: http://campaign.visitnorway.com/en/us/Disney-Frozen/Disneys-Frozen--inspired-by-Norway/?id=3816 |

Actually Nick Fury turning black in the comic books predates the Marvel movie run-up to The Avengers by several years. He was first shown as being black in The Ultimates, which came out in 2002, a full 4-5 years before the first Iron Man movie would have even been cast. Samuel Jackson was cast as Nick Fury because he was practically a dead ringer for the new rendition of the ultimate spy, not the other way around. In fact, Jackson was as widely-popular a fan dream choice for playing the role as Patrick Stewart was for playing Professor X in the X-Men movies. |

This movie is still being directed by a couple of white American guys so the whole Japanese culture aspect of this film is already in question. They just arbitrarily decided to create an entirely new world where ancient Japan is smashed on top of a modern US city and given the incredibly clumsy name of "San Fransokyo". It's a pretty convoluted way to diversify an entire cast of characters that weren't even white to begin with.
They could have simply kept it in Japan and diversified the cast by adding in people of different or mixed race since they do exist in that country but white people are still the target audience so it needs to be set in the US with Japanese aesthetics clumsily thrown in because of the horrible source material. |
