HOLY SHIZZNATS!!! This is one of those classic films that Fred Patten was talking about in his animation history blog. This is really excellent news. A classic film getting a release. Now I can we get 'The Great Alakazaam a release that would be great as well. Great job Warner Bros. I guess you're doing something right other than messing up DC animated releases.

Pretty cool from the historical anime context, but it's probably pulling teeth to get most fans not already interested in the old stuff to ever check a film like this or Hakujaden out. This one's even in 'Scope, which makes it feel less "dated", it certainly helped on Cleopatra and Senya Ichiya Monogatari. Too bad it's only DVD though, I'd love to see some of these on BD and for the true artistry to shine through.

Here's a rather glowing review of the film from the New York Times dated 1963. It seems the reviewer was open to animated films that didn't sport Disney levels of animation. Too bad everyone else didn't see it like that so theses films didn't do very well over here.

Proto 50's-60's anime was in that transitional pre-identity stage between "Artsy traditional Japanese-screen animation" and "Clueless vintage Disney envy".
This is a more historic example of the former, whereas an example of the latter, like Unico, Alakazam the Great or Jack & the Witch can get rather...............odd. As it is, it's not Ghibli, but the attempt at an ancient-Japanese look at least looks sane enough for animation historian/buffs. |

That dub sounds surprisingly good. I'm especially impressed at how well synchronized it is, considering the limitations and difficulties surrounding ADR production back in those days.

It's a really good movie. I wrote an article on it a few weeks back after finding an airing from Turner Classic Movies in my VHS collection. It has a lot of elements that would be used in shows like Naruto and Dragonball. Great stuff

I had no idea there was life before Astro Boy, at least broadcast here in the States. Now, if only the original were available subbed...
