This is a question that I have been thinking for a long time. In my life I have seen more or less 50 animes, and in all of them I had found ecchi, hentai, or at least some fan service in most of the cases. I wonder if there is an anime without fan sirvice? It seems to me the only anime without it is "Heidi". I know 50 is a short number that is why, I would like someone to tell me an anime that does not even suggest that kind of conent. Thanks

I don't think that all anime has fanservice, no. Much of the series for younger children, such as, say… Hamtaro, don't feature fanservice at all. But above that level, yes, you are quite likely to find some sort of fanservice in most anime series.

I can definitely see why you find it incredibly difficult to find a series that doesn't have fanservice, but as I said, it's probably because of the type of audience a lot of anime is intended for. If it's not for small children, it'll probably have fanservice.

No, not all anime have fan service. Some prime examples are Gankutsuou, Monster, or Mushishi. Not a single one of them has bouncing breasts, low cut tops, upskirt shots, or any of the sort. The first two have some sexual content, but it's more so to add an element of maturity than anything else.

I would also imagine none of Miyazaki's movies have any outright fan service as well. Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen, Jin-Roh, Steamboy, Crest/Banner of the Stars. I could name several dozen titles from My Anime that don't contain the slightest bit of this. You just have to look harder, basically.

Not all anime containts overt, OTT or gratuitous T&A fanservice, but there's always something there for the fans. It really depends what turns you on - Ghibli isn't exactly renowned for cheap service but some people out there might rewatch the bath scene in Totoro, that flash of Kiki's bloomers or that onsen scene in the one I can never remember the name of.

Children's Anime. Even the Japanese can be rather discreet when it comes to children. Razz

Yes, but there was nudity in Digimon and that can be considered fanservice (I know someone who won't stop going on about it in fact)

No. Comedies, yes. Action, horror, maybe. Hentais are hentais and it's no longer fanservice, it's the real thing. Whether there's fanservice in the anime depends upon whether the creators of the anime decide they want to put in the fanservice or not.

If you find any in Hamtaro or Samurai Pizza Cats, please let me know.

Hmmm, how about Yugioh? Oh wait, Dark Magician Girl. Hawt! Twisted Evil

i dont like fanservice. it can add to the comedic aspect of the show, but many times one or more characters exist just for fanservice. a little for the storyline, but otherwise, no.

a lot of times though it can add well into the story, and other times fanservice exists just because of a cult following, as seen with the female characters in eva. if a characters attractive, there will be fanservice.

its just a part of anime.

Hm, I would say Ghibli works don't have any. Also, Haibane, Kino's Journey, and probably some others I can't think of. But then again, there's probably someone out there who could interpret any of the aforementioned as having fanservice of some sort. Smile

Is this supposed to be a joke? Fan service implies that it was done to entice people to buy a movie or watch a series that they might not otherwise. Do you really think that any of what you described meets that criteria?

No... not usually, close though. It's designed to please the viewer's inevitably dirty thoughts about the characters, only in very rare instances (that for the record, I can't actually think of any) are they designed to draw in more people. If anything it's an attempt to try and push the otaku from 'enjoying' the series on TV, to wanting to 'enjoy' the series at home and at their own leisure. Without wanting to get into what that means... I think you see what I'm generally getting at. Remember, unless the person is already watching the show, they won't know there's a panty shot, which makes it pretty hard to draw people in. Of course... there's always exceptions, like the shows designed around fanservice, ala Ikki Tousen, Najica, etc etc.

Looking through the top 50 most scene titles on ANN, many of them don't have fan service. Akira and Grave of the Fireflies don't even have sexy women in them. Most of the other titles range somewhere between an attractive woman in the lead to full blown fan service. I personally wouldn't consider shows like Gundam W, Haibane Renmei, Witch Hunter Robin, Last Exile, Wolf's Rain, and Trigun as shows with fan service although they all do have pretty girls in them unlike Ginga Eiyu Densetsu (Galactic Heroes), or Zipang (so far). As you get away from the "popular" and reach the more artsy and acclaimed titles, like Metropolis or Honneamise, you will find an even lower ratio of fan service,

All anime has fanservice. No, wait, stow that; all entertainment has fanservice. Period. It all depends on what type of "fan" is watching the show; in our common colloquial language, "fanservice" seems limited only to sexually-themed plot points, costumes, themes or innuendo; that's too narrow a scope to cover what "fanservice" really means.

Frankly, I see anything exciting that stirs up an audience as fanservice, however depressing; even if there is no excitement, doing something to progress a plot point can also be seen as fanservice.

Examples:

1. Goku turning into an Oozaru in Dragonball.
2. Orihime's abnormally large breasts in Bleach.
3. Maebara Keiichi remembering his past in Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni.
4. Major Motoko Kusanagi reuniting with an old friend in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig.
5. Emiya Shirou kissing Saber in Fate/stay night.
6. Detective Conan kicking someone with an object in Cased Closed.
