...But didn't they censor the original run?
If they aren't, I'll buy 'em all. Until I have that confirmation, however, I'm watching from the sidelines.

I was just looking at Rightstuf and wondering if it was worth trying to place an order for this title.

Restless: Technically, they forced Araki to redraw certain volumes. If it makes it easier to deal with, this also happened in Japan.

Guess the CR airing of the anime is helping with the reputation of the franchise, which is long overdue.

Also leery about the censorship. With the anime actually legally streaming in NA, it'd be the perfect opportunity to give Part 3 a widespread re-release. Hopefully they have the hindsight now to not censor it this time around? Unfortunately I doubt it, but if it is I'll still probably end up cherrypicking my favorite volumes/fights from this part just so I can own them in some form.
Also, the part itself is over 20 years old, the NA release over 10. Can't we get omnibuses sometime soon? 16 single volumes is a big commitment for me, omnibuses are easier to store and justify buying for me. I hope they could be in this part's future if the reprint sells well.

It should be omnibuses and it should be less censored. However, it's highly unlikely it will ever get a completely uncensored re-release when you consider that the original Japanese release had Dio destroying mosques which didn't bode too well for Arabic readers.
I'm also worried that the re-release will change character names to be more in line with All Star Battle on the PS3.

I don't mind them changing the character names so long as we finally have some semblance of consistency.

Quote: | In May 2008, both Shueisha and studio A.P.P.P. halted manga/OVA shipments of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure after a complaint had been launched against them from Egyptian Islamic fundamentalists, after noticing a scene in the OVAs that has the villain, Dio Brando, reading a book depicting pages from the Qur'an. This recall affected the English-language releases as well, causing Viz Media and Shueisha to cease publication for a year. Even though the manga did not feature that specific scene, Shueisha had Araki redraw scenes that depicted characters fighting on top of, and destroying, mosques for later printings of the series |
Yep, we can blame the fundamentalists for this one.

You should be glad you're getting any Jojo legally at all, considering all these greedy record companies like shaking down people over a friggin' name-drop of a band.

this isn't really new news, they said all the reprinted volumes will be available by the end of may around 1.5 months ago, only volumes 6 & 8 to go(which are also the only one's i need(though i have the japanese box sets of the first 5 parts anyway...)

Well, let's hope that the re-release will finally get people buying the manga. It's high time for that.

I do. The band names are the gimmick that make Jojo, Jojo. To take away that gimmick arguably makes the series lose its fun charm.

Until I see actual evidence that a band, a record company or a manager have sued someone over the use of their name in a work of mere fiction that has no literal reference to them, I will stand by my principle that the legal concerns over any name usage are simply baseless and are more reflective of commercial concerns than anything. Simply put, it's much ado about nothing.

Isn't Crunchyroll offering the manga? I know that's not print, but is it the same as Viz's version? Is it Part 1 or Part 3?

No, they aren't. |
They are offering it on their store, all 16 volumes.
I assume part(arc) 3 as the volume number matches up (note there are so far 110 volumes combined of the manga(still ongoing), divided into 8 arcs).
Not sure if the version on sale on Crunchy is censored as well. Though I suspect it is.

Thanks for the responses. My concern is primarily over what VIZ had him change. While I disagree with Shueisha's decision, there isn't much that can be done about it. If I'm going to buy an English release, I would at least like it to maintain the current Japanese release's imagery.
I'm more lenient with the naming because I know it is out of VIZ's hands. It's really too bad that it isn't considered fair use. At least official-in-Japan names for some characters are different enough that they can be used (ie; Esidisi). My personal preference would be to have the rest have very minor changes or be taken directly from the katakana. That way, it avoids any trademark problems but it is obvious who the characters are named after.
