Broken Blade (movie series) Genres: action, drama, fantasy Themes: Mecha, military, politics, tragedy, war Plot Summary: The new Broken Blade TV EDITION is a recompilation of the six part film series with added scenes that were not animated. The series will be directed by the original creator Yunosuke Yoshinaga. Returning cast members include Souichiro Hoshi as Arrow, Shiwa Saito as Sigyn Erster and Yuichi Nakamura as King Hodr. There will also be a new opening and ending song sung by Sayaka Sasaki and Aira Yuki respectively. (from Crunchyroll) ---------------------------------- Episode 1: even though it's a re-complication, I thought it was well done from the beginning. It's been awhile since I've seen the movie anyways so I decided to give this a try for some refreshment. And it doesn't waste any time of course with the mecha getting right into combat. The new OP song is decent I guess and everything is smooth so far. I'm looking forward to the battles that haven't been animated yet. |

Episode 1
spoiler[Seen all six movies. Really enjoyed them too. Hope the anime will be at least equally good. It was nice to see Rygart, Sigyn, Hodr, Zess and Cleo again ^^ A reject who turns out to be the savior, ironic right? Guess that's the whole point.] Episode 2 spoiler[Showing off with new mecha was a success. Well, as much as it could've been for his first time. Friends on different sides of the war. Repairing that friendship is not gonna be easy... Cleo is the most fun character, while Zess is the most serious one. That guy needs to relax a bit. New mecha is gonna come in handy. Rygart just needs to learn how to use it right.] |

Would be interested to see a running commentary from someone who's very familiar with the movies about what is getting changed and/or added on for adapting it to TV episode form. Since I have the movies on bilingual Blu-Ray, I don't intend to check this out unless I have a compelling reason to see new (or at least newly-handled) content.

I guess that I am with Key in that I don't have a lot of interest in watching Break Blade again, and might just come here to find out what was different from the tv series.

Episode 3
spoiler[Athens vs Krishna. Zess and his little squad are not to be taken lightly. They aren't gonna give up either. Krishna is in deep problems from multiple sides. Flashbacks were nice and helped to understand the story better. Rygart and Zess, opposites in every way. Such a shame they aren't on the same side... This is a mecha anime worth watching.] Episode 4 spoiler[The action scenes are awesome. Rygart's mecha is amazing! The emotional side stories of the past are nice too. They explain connections between the characters. Rygart isn't a fight loving type. All he wants are all his friends back together in peace.] |

I like the notion of following this re-release to compare and contrast to similar series that premiered after its initial airing.

spoiler[Zess got himself in bad situation. Most bad ass character is definitely Baldr. He is one totally cool guy with a really cool head. Things are getting interesting. Cleo sure looks like an adult for a 12 year old girl. Never would have guessed.. ROFL, even that owl is smarter than Rygart. He's just a kind hearted sap. Nice episode.] |

Late to the party, but as someone who never saw the movies, I'm enjoying this show a lot. I was wondering why a show with seemingly absurd production values wasn't attracting much discussion, but now I know. Are these scenes taken directly from the movies? It has a great '90s feel to em. Most scenes use 3-4 tones on characters and the coloration and line detail is great. The music is nice and dramatic too. It's one of those shows that make me realize how much a studio's direction can make or break the entire look and feel of a story. I think they did good on this one.

Looks like new scenes will finally show up next episode.
It's unfortunate you chose to watch the TV run instead of the OVAs. You're getting pretty terrible audio quality and a lot of condensed scenes. |

spoiler[The situation seems to be escalating. Neither side is going to back down. Looks like it just got even more personal for Rygart. As usual he makes his decisions full of rage. Guess it never crossed his mind it was an ambush just for him. Think this episode actually had new stuff in it. It sure was dramatic and action filled. Can't wait to watch next episode!] |

New stuff!
spoiler[Girge's encounter with Nike plays out differently with new people and a brand new fight] But, if you're interested in the series and haven't watched it, go for the OVAs because you'll get better audio quality, no cuts, and you can come back and watch the new scene after. |

spoiler[I really enjoyed watching them fight. What bothers me the most is too much talking. Wish they balanced the dialogue & fighting. Rygart has certainly changed. He is far from the naive, gullible & innocent young man he was before. The reality & cruelty of war did a number on him.] |
