I assume "characters" in this case refers to the Titans?
So they definitely have the talent for good special effects. I assume that some of the profit from the manga, anime, light novel and merchandise sales will be going towards the budget... Can they keep it from being incredibly cheesy and fake looking with their combined power? |

The Japanese movie industry is incapable of doing a AoT justice with a live-action movie. It would cost at least a quarter of a billion dollars to do it right, and they don't have the talent to make it happen even with the budget (which would never happen, anyway).
Also, the irony of a character explicitly stated as NOT being Asian being played by a Japanese guy... because Japan is just as bad, if not worse, than Hollywood at white(yellow?)-washing. Yes, I know they aren't going to cast a white foreigner as the lead in a Japanese-language movie. I'm just saying. Also, that guy is way too old (looking) to be playing a ~17-year old. This is why live action adaptations of anime are a bad idea. Either they're going to be white-washed/changed beyond recognition by Hollywood or simply not done justice by Japan. *cough* http://variety.com/2014/film/reviews/film-review-kikis-delivery-service-1201121673/ *cough* At least the poster is cool. |

Rurouni Kenshin is an exception to this rule.

Only because they spent a sh'tton of money and put all the best technical talent behind it.
But Rurouni Kenshin at heart a samurai movie, which is a specialty of Japan. It wouldn't be anywhere near the technical nightmare of making a decent AoT movie. To make the titans scary they have to look real. Period. That alone would make or break the the movie. And then there's the matter of the walls, and the flying sequences, which simply won't look right if done by Japan. The flying sequences could be really cool or really lame depending on how they're done. |

I'm thinking that the 3D gear scenes will have to look like Spider-Man webslinging scenes, and those movies (Sam Raimi's and Amazing) took tons of money and lots of Hollywood tech to look as good as they did. I just don't think Japan can replicate it. But wouldn't it be great if they proved us all wrong?

It's not going to happen.
And to be fair, CG with a guy in a mask swing hundreds of feet through the air from an invisible anchor point is one thing... having living people swing and run across rooftops with spear guns (while having conversations and getting eaten by monsters) is something else. |
