Just curious. Do you get rid of them, or sell them if you can? Or do you keep them? And if you do keep them, do you put them away somewhere or just leave em on the shelf like always?

For movies I just box them up and put them away. They're small enough that its no big deal to keep them just in case I ever need them for something. I'm kinda torn when it comes to shows though. I've got a few shows, Samurai Champloo, SE Lain and Moribito (and probably Fate/Stay Night sooner or later) that I've upgraded to BD despite having a real nice singles set of DVDs with an artbox. They're awfully nice and I like having them on display. But given the space they take up I'm not sure it is worth it for something I'll NEVER use. And that may be even more true if I put them away. I mean sure, storage space is less valuable than shelf space, but then there's absolutely no benefit to having them at all since I can't even see them. They definitely seem too good to get rid of though. So yeah, I'm not sure. And this problem is only going to get worse as I upgrade more shows to BD.

I give them away. It is a form of recycling.

Luckily I have a younger brother I can dump stuff onto. Very rarely do I double dip on shows, though. While I do mostly buy Blu Rays these days, I'm fine with DVDs and don't feel the need to 'upgrade' any shows. There are some exceptions, such as Strike Witches and Hellsing Ultimate, but that's because Funimation was devious. They released the 2nd parts of these titles on Blu Ray with an art box for holding the first parts as well. I had those first parts on DVD but I couldn't leave those spots empty.

I keep them. Right now I just leave them on the shelf with the Blu-ray, but if space gets tight I will put them in storage somewhere.

If I like a show enough to buy again when I already have it then I like it enough to keep the DVD as a back-up in case something happens to the Blu-ray.

I'm actually one of those people that doesn't upgrade their DVDs to blu-rays when they come out, so for me, it's a non-issue.

Studio Ghibli films are the only thing I already have or would consider upgrading to blu ray.
I have given the old dvds for those away, since the new releases for those are combo packs.
I can not think of anything else that I own that would warrant blu ray. New purchases lean blu ray, unless I know I will be watching while traveling, since I do not have a portable blu ray player.

For the time being, I'm keeping 'em. There aren't too many titles that I own that even have BD releases, yet. But eventually, I'll probably sell them on eBay since a decent amount of them are collector's editions or come in the limited edition boxes.

I'm one of the few that doesn't really care about Blu-ray. Yes, I bought the cheaper releases of Fate/Zero and I have Psycho Pass preordered, but I got those mostly because they have the OST included. That, and I like having artboxes since I only buy shows I really like and would watch over again.

It needs to be a pretty crazy value for me to double dip so if I already had it on DVD I'm likely not going to re-buy. This is backed up by a gap of massive financial devastation that happened right around the time the format transition was happening. So most of my DVDs don't even have BD releases that I know of, and the source wasn't HD anyway.

For the ones that did, I checked if any of my friends would give me equal-or-better-than trade-in value at a local geek store. If yes, a deal was made. If not, the store got them. I also sometimes off DVDs I've concluded I'll never watch again. Sometimes the store gives me a surprisingly huge amount. Popotan for example was worth $30, and I paid that for it eons ago.

I'd prefer to donate them to the library hopefully be used as rental items, but I don't think their collection systems work that way, but they'd instead go to a little "donated items for sale" shelf. I'd prefer ensuring that anime is forced into permanent collections for anyone to check out, to help fill out their current meager amounts. Maybe your library systems work differently.

I'm pretty sure, since my local library ties your ID to donations, many of my titles would land me in trouble if the wrong people saw them. Nanoha nude transformation scene? Serious problem. Elfen Lied? Very serious problem.

Yeah, I had the same problem. My library was doing all these fundraisers to buy new books for the library. They even put a list up on there website, and I saw that like ten of them I had. They were sitting in a box with a bunch of other books I was going to donate but never got around to .

Took them in thinking they would really like that they would get ten brand new books on the list for free but I was wrong. The person I talked to grabbed the box and literally through it at the ground near the used books for pennies shelf. They don't like to sort through donations so everything goes there. I got pissed and took it all to goodwill.

I don't do much double-dipping but on the few occasions I have upgraded to BD I have kept the DVDs due to portability issues-not everyone has a BD player. In addition the anime club I belong to used to have regular showings of anime and they were not able to play BD. I think pretty soon I may get rid of the DVDs but I'm not sure if I would bother trying to sell them, I would probably donate to a library or give them away.

It hasn't turned into a major problem for me, but it is a little vexing and I am concerned that it could get worse. For the shows that are LE and I really like the artboxes I keep those DVDs right next to their BD counterparts on the shelf. A few I've given away to family and friends who might like them. A few I'm going to keep in a box in the closet because I find that its easier for me to grab screen caps off those than BD. But I have a few that don't have artboxes and the new stuff is a combo pack. Where I was living at before (just recently moved) was very conservative and no I don't think the library would have wanted my extra copy of Black Lagoon with all of the cursing and bloodshed. I know I can pawn off BL on one of my younger cousins, but I've got a few other anime in the same situation.

I had sold off some of my collection on ebay--but sometimes that takes too much time--and for a while there I was getting some fair prices for trade-ins at amazon--but now they've totally gone greedy and you're lucky if you get a buck for somethings. I may retry ebay in the future if I can spare the time, but I think invariably some stuff will just go into a box to gather dust like some of my old VHS.

The only series that I've upgraded so far is Cowboy Bebop and the BD sets are next to the DVDs. If I get really pressed for space, they'll either end up in storage or I'll give them away if I find someone who's interested.

I don't really see myself upgrading that much in the future to be honest. I'm only willing to upgrade if it's a series that I think is really worth the upgrade (which Cowboy Bebop definitely was).
