I'm sure Australians and Italians will be glad to know they're not living in first world countries...

Also, Japan is conservative as heck when it comes to gender issues. They're relatively accepting of homosexuality (at least compared to some of their neighbors), but marriages are between a man (breadwinner) and a woman (homemaker) and thus same-sex marriage is a pretty low priority. I actually read about this story; Tokyo Disney originally insisted that one of them had to be wearing a tuxedo so it at least looked like a straight marriage. Disney headquarters made them change it.

If you look at that poll data, btw, there's a 14-point gender gap difference in Japan on acceptance of homosexuality, with women saying it's okay at 61% and men at 47%. Whatever its many flaws, I think BL is doing it's job. Very Happy

I think some states do allow same sex marriage, I heard of Massachusetts allowing it. As for Russia I think they are considered a first world country and as far as I know they don't allow same sex marriage.

Mentioning Japan not recognizing same sex marriage, since Japan isn't shy in having same sex relationships in anime and manga I always thought they were more open to it.

Question: Was the poll scientific and use neutral language? Does it correlate at all to acceptance of gay marriage? I know of people who, if asked, would say homosexuality should be legal, but would draw a thick line at marriage.

I find the topic interesting is all, particularly with the output of BL. Is there anything about perceptions of homosexuality based on BL? When I was reading Fumi Yoshinaga's Not Love but Delicious Foods, it struck me how she hadn't met any gay people, despite writing about them. And, of course, BL tends to have pretty heteronormative pairs. I've wondered if people, particularly in the young adult demographics, have an image of these couples representing LGBT groups. Do high schools have gay-straight alliance clubs, or is it a bit too 'activist' for the age group and setting?

Gay marriage is legal in 17 states. Bans were struck down in Utah and Oklahoma, but they're in limbo while an appeal is processing. Gay marriage is one of the real hot topic issues, but we're at a point where the country is pushing forward. Give it a little more time and the entire nation will be there.

It's from Pew research, so to my knowledge it's scientific. The question asked was "Should society accept homosexuality?" The question didn't pertain to same-sex marriage, which is a separate issue, and to my knowledge has less support.

Don't know. Like I said, BL has a ton of flaws. Most of the ones I've encountered are basically the same as het josei smut, only the female character is now male. I would speculate that the popularity of "love is love!" storylines in female-targetted media might have an effect on polling responses to the above question, however. Overall, when there are big gender divides (there aren't in most countries; Japan's is unusually large), women are always the more accepting. I guess homosexuality doesn't threaten us as much as men?

Absolutely not. I had to explain what Gay-straight alliances were to the exchange students who visited my town. Their response was "People come out in high school? Amerika sugoi!"

No, Russia is not a first world country, not by a long shot. A LOT of folks live in poverty here. And yes, almost everyone is homophobic as fudge, even those who are not religious, so no same-sex marriage in Russia any time soon, that's for sure.

In summary, homosexuality is accepted only as an aspect of media entertainment but it is very stereotyped. Unlike the West there's nothing in Japan's philosophic origins that expressly denounce homosexuality. There's really no point for a gay person to come out because none of these stereotyped perceptions of how people behave or appear really has anything to do with one's sexual orientation. All you can do is say you're gay, but in most peoples minds, according to TV and media, a gay person is a hugely flamboyant, pushover and more like a sort of clown, so it doesn't really click in peoples minds. But if an employer or a professor finds out you're gay, it really bodes poorly for the gay person because the employer might think you're really like one of those clown characters in real life, but you just pretend to be "normal" at work and they see you as very disingenuous and dishonest which is looked down on in most professional settings.

No Britain also doesn't recognise same sex marriages, yet, but very soon. I'm more surprised this happened at a Disney resort, being such an ultra conservative, family orientated venue of old. I guess Tokyo is a lot more liberal with these things.
