As far as difficulty of adaptation goes, GitS should be considerably easier than Dragon Ball. Heck, the original GitS movie already had the feel of an animated version of a Hollywood movie as it was [think Blade Runner].

Now we are finally making progress with a live action anime adaptation from Hollywood? Once when we get to the casting and seeing the official trailer, consider me skeptical.

I like Snow White & the Huntsman and will Rupert Sanders put his terrible past with having an affair with Kristen Stewart behind him and show the promising talent he had? Who knows.

Check out Sanders' previous attempt at "adapting" anime. Also, technically, this wouldn't be the first live-action GITS. Rolling Eyes

This will go the usual two ways. "Adapted" into the usual americanised, localised pool of slurry bollox, or not get made at all. I'm betting on the latter. Laughing

How and why does it spell disaster?

A lot of GiTS is military police procedural, only it takes place in the future and has a huge internet/cyborg bent. Sprinkle in "what is a cyborg, is it human" talk. It's really not material that the west couldn't get.

I also don't understand how this spells disaster... In the worst case scenario, the movie is garbage and unfaithful to anything GITS related; does that mean that the rest of the property is now discredited as well? Do we not have our films and series to go back to?

Even if it is a bad adaptation, how does this affect anybody who's already an established fan? The worst it will do, is not attract a new fan base.

Yes, the Dragon Ball film was awful, but does that mean that I stopped loving the franchise? Of course not.

So in the end, let's not over-dramatize this. If it's bad, then so be it. If it's good, let's all be pleasantly surprised.

Blech... the GitS franchise in all of its iterarions always feels like a uniquely Japanese story. Sure, the philosophical concepts the franchise explores are universal, but the literal stories usually focus on aspects of Japanese politics or Japanese culture or both. Robot geisha getting hacked and reprogrammed to murder a politician/client is way more elegant and interesting than a robot prostitute doing the same, but that's how the west would adapt it that first ep of GitS SAC. Plus, the Major's name is Kusanagi Motoko. She maybe 95% cybernetic, but that is a 100% Japanese name. You know they won't give the part to Rinko Kikuchi (you know she would be great in it)--they'd probably give it to some 20-something white woman like Kristen Stewart or Megan Fox. If anything, they should change everything but the loose dynamic of Section 9. Obviously, there should be a strong woman in charge and her #2 should a big tough guy, after that, everything changes so long as the themes stay the same.

Or you know, they could just sink money into a Japanese live action production. That's be super cool.

Some would say that started in the west.

I hope they go for it. It will be interesting to see where they take the story from the manga, into this movie.

Japanese live action adaptations don't have much cross-over value, usually due to production weaknesses like special effects.

Hopefully, those doing the movie will have a passion for it, and a budget to make it fantastic.

Worst case scenario, we will always have our existing movies and TV series' to fall back on.

I agree unless the director reads the original manga and watches GIT:SAC, I don't trust them.
