Note that Live Tiles for pinned websites really only works with Internet Explorer 11 set as the default browser. Otherwise, the tile will just be a link to the website with no live feed.
The tablet form factor for Windows 8 is on the rise, especially after this year's CES. While many are likely to install another browser anyway or use some other RSS/news reader, IE11 has a neat little feature for its pinned websites. While I do use Firefox regularly for my laptop, I use IE11 on my tablet because it's a bit more touch-friendly and really isn't so bad. From Modern IE11, you can pin any website as a Pinned Favorite. On any webpage, select the Favorite (star) icon from the menu, then select the Pin symbol to pin a webpage to the Start screen. If a website has the necessary code, the pinned website will be a Live Tile that updates regularly with the latest items on the feed. I think that this is something that could be done with the All Articles feed or the Newsroom feed. Microsoft created a tool to easily generate the code necessary for Live Tiles, and they link to their Pinned Site API for further customization. Here's an example with Windows Phone Central as a large tile and DeviantArt as a wide tile. |
