Well....Even though this movie isn't a "sequel" in the traditional sense. It is a continuation of the story in FFVII. I think the main purpose of this "sequel" IS to pander to the fans of the original game. I highly doubt that this movie was made in order to drum up demand for the game(although it will). I believe it was made for the fans. A "Thank You" of sorts.

You mean their wallets. Square knows people will buy anything that's associated with Final Fantasy 7, and they're sure as hell prepared to exploit the hell out of that knowlege. To be fair, I haven't yet seen the movie. I'm really not expecting much plotwise, but at worst it's lots of eye candy, so I'll check it out. |

You don't have to be that harsh. The story's at least a C+/C-, compared to Spirits Within.

Now I feel sad I agree with all the ratings though. Story wise for someone who has never played the game, is horrible. But for the fans, the story didn´t really matter. I kind of didn´t like the motorcycle riding/fighting scenes. They looked awkward and I just couldn´t bring myself to say ¨Thats Cool¨, it was more like ¨Whats next?¨. And I´m also glad someone else finally mentioned the crazy camera angles. Although I admit I thought they were cool, I had trouble seeing what exactly was going on. |

I could see why they rated the story a D. There really is no story, whatsoever. There's not supposed to be one, because nothing is really accomplished and if something did occur which altered the storyline, there might be some serious commotion among the FF7 fans. Yet, the movie flowed quite smoothly (for the FF7 fan, at least) and didn't have awkward or truly wasted moments, like you sometimes see in D-rated anime series. Fair enough.
It's not a standalone movie and wasn't intended to be (hence the title containing "Final Fantasy VII" in it). Square knows that probably half of those that own a PS/2 own or have played Final Fantasy 7, and those that played it would love Advent Children and those that didn't shouldn't be watching it in the first place. In its context, this movie was brilliantly made, IMO. Well you don't have to take my word for it, the ratings speak loud and clear. Oh and don't mind the troll who voted "worst ever" in 40 different languages because it doesn't even affect the histogram =\ Thank you for having some anti-troll measures on the rating system. |

i have a feeling the only reason this has a "Masterpiece" rating is cause of extreme bias, it can't be accurate. someone's gotta betipping the scales.

Only reason it would get a masterpiece rating is from a fanboy, and there are alot of them. They movie itseld is flawed, mostly in the story area and also some things that happen in the movie like Cloud getting a mid air boost from a dead woman or flying through Mega Flare without getting even a tan.

From a fake subtitle file that circulated last fall when this movie was "available" online...

I think the story getting a D is acceptable and justifiable, to be honest while Spirits Within wasn't related to the Final Fantasy franchise in any noticeable way it still easily had a better story than Advent Children. The story still only really feels like a C or so to those who have played the game, and a D- or F for those who have not so D makes a good middle ground.
That said, I also agree about Evangelion, hype and fanboy's keeps those ratings high, it really only felt average or slightly above average to me but certainly no masterpiece. |

"...that panders to longtime fans of the original game."
No crap that's why they made it in the first place, for the legions of fans of FFVII. No the story wasn't the greatest, it was like cramming a 60+ hour game into 100 minutes. I think Advent Children would be much much better as a game. That way you'd have plenty of time to develop the characters and get a really great story. But that doesn't matter to Square though. The DVD is selling like crazy. I went to buy it at Best Buy on my way home from work and they were sold out. All of their locations in the area were as well. I tried Circuit City and Target too. I called FYE cause there's only one store in the whole state and I don't think many people even know it exists and they had a couple left. I got there and a different person then who I talked to on the phone said they were sold out. I said I just talked to someone on the phone 10 minutes ago and you said you had some. Then I looked over at a different shelf and they had one left. My girlfriend said I looked like I was going to kill the chick until I found that last copy!! lol |

As a hardline FF7 loyalist (I'm one of those guys whose first FF experience was FF7), I must say that I thought the story wasn't too bad. It wasn't totally terrible, although it was very simple...but it certainly didn't match up to the legendary status in of FF7 in my heart...
With that said, I never regretted for a moment getting and waiting for the DVD. The fansubs were floating in the air since late last year, but I held out. Even when my roommates were watching fansubs on the TV in the lounge, I locked myself in my room and refused to see any of it. To me, anything FF7 is something holy, something beyond piracy and fansubbing, and watching it yesterday certainly proved me right. Throughout the whole time, I was giggling like a fangirl as my favorite casts got back together and were totally kicking butt....a pity that some of them don't get enough screentime!! (basically, everyone in the original team except Cloud, Aeris, Tifa, and Vincent) But the Turks were ultra cool. I love them. I didn't know it sold that well...I had my copy pre-ordered at EB a couple weeks ago, so it was very easy for me. I love Advent Children. |

Yeah, I'm a little surprised the Story didn't get an F. I guess there was story, so that bumped it up.
This movie can be summarized in two words: Ooh, shiny. |

Hehe Yeah, that just about sums it up there.
Yeah, despite the flawed story it's still a fun one to watch now and then. I also couldn't find it though, went to two Best Buy's and both were sold out, nearest they had was in St.Cloud which is a good hour and a half away. Then I went to Target and looked and it was the same deal, all sold out with only two showing at one local store but the inventory delay was an hour so there was no guarantees. I just went home and ordered it, Amazon had free shipping and had it for $14.98 at the time although it looks like it has gone up in price since, good thing I ordered it then. |

Personally, I'd hesitate to call Advent Children the new "industry standard" for CG animation. Maybe in Japan, but I know that with many of my professors and peers, Advent Children was really more of an impressive novelty than something to actually strive for (basically, "ooh, shiny" ), while studios like Pixar are still held in the highest regard as the main "standard" to strive for.
Other than that though, I fully agree with the review. Great animation on a "blah" story. |
