Anyone purchased anything from this site lately? I have seen them advertising some upcoming titles as much as a quarter lower in price than anything at any other site, and I'm curious to find out if they are for real or not.

Rakuten.com bought out Buy.com about 2 years ago, and yes they are legit. The last time I bought something from them was a year ago. However, they are also a marketplace and I find that the inventory is not always current on the site. I've had several orders cancelled throughout the years because its not actually in stock and I wasn't immediately informed, which left me quite peeved. As far as pre-orders for anime, I haven't ever made any there, but I believe forum member Sohma_Curse has. I'm sure he will pop in soon and share his experiences.

I bought some Higurashi manga and stuff from them maybe a month ago, everything was just fine for me. I'm pretty sure I've bought DVDs from them since they became Rakuten as well with no problem. Just keep an eye out for them vs a marketplace seller.
The only thing is, unlike Amazon, they don't offer free shipping on pre-orders. |

The price that I'm seeing them advertise for the (for instance) upcoming Girls und Panzer Blu-Ray is so much lower that you'd still be saving a few bucks even with shipping figured in.
If that's a marketplace rather than site price, though, then that would make more sense. I'll be sure to look closely at that before ordering anything. |

From what I can tell, current Rakuten price for GuP BD is $39.84+$2.90 shipping. It's cheaper than Rigthstuf since it isn't on sale right now (I got it for $41.99 on Rightstuf). But it can be found cheaper.
Even with shipping+tax DVDPlanet still offers it $5 cheaper. I used to use Buy.com for a lot of things. However ever since they were bought by Rakuten nothing they offer is much of a deal compared to other places on the 'net. |

Here is a discussion on My Figure Collection about them:
http://myfigurecollection.net/club/72/discussions/&did=2986 Ordered a cup that was sold out everywhere else from one of their stores and it worked out fine in the end. I find the ordering process a bit confusing though so they are never my first choice. |

They are a marketplace, but when you preorder, it ONLY preorders with Buy.com (their own supplier) and they wont display the prices for the other stores that will eventually sell the item until it's released. However, the few times I've preordered with Rakuten, the title immediately gets backordered through buy.com on the day of the release while all the other sellers have full stock and are ready to ship the day it comes out (and usually have it for the same price or lower than the preorder price). Once it's released, I usually order it from deepdiscount, blowitouttahere, or importcds (which, for some reason, offer prices that are typically a dollar or two cheaper than their ebay listings for the same items). What's especially frustrating about them is that they charge you upon checkout, NOT when it ships. So you'll pay for a preorder and then suffer without the money while it's backordered. It's easy to cancel your order then order it from another seller, but still, it's a hassle. For the most part, though, I have been happy with my purchases from Rakuten, and they are definitely legit. Just avoid preordering with them lol DVDPlanet.com has since overtaken them for the majority of my purchases though. Better prices, free shipping over $50, don't charge you until your order is shipped, etc. |

Interestingly, DVDPlanet had a very substantially better price than RightStuf (or even Rakuten) on GnP, but RightStuf's price on Wolf Children was actually a few dollars lower.
Seems like a weird inconsistency, but whatever. |

I find that Deep Discount and DVDPlanet seem to give better deals on the Sentai/ADV/Maiden Japan titles. For example, I picked up last week Elfen Lied BD for $18.49 and its been consistently in the $30-45 range. Right now RS has it for $19.99 in their Wave 1 specials. So, I still did better overall. I also picked up last week from DP Garden of Words BD for $13.01 and RS has it right now for $17.99. I don't get the same kind of deals with Funimation stuff though. |
