I watched this movie yesterday, spoiler[and even through all the destruction Kaneda and gang happened to survive. When Kei asked Kaneda what happened to Tetsuo, he told her that he didn't make it, when his friend asked him, he said he didn't know. Then we go to a space far away and then we hear Tetsuo's voice saying, "My name is...Tetsuo". ]End movie. Therefore my question is, spoiler[did Tetsuo really die?]
BTW I thought this was a great movie. The detailed facial expressions of the characters is what caught my attention first. Then it was the soundtrack. Reminded me of when I'm watching something by Hayao Miyazaki. Truly remarkable for a movie made in it's time. |

spoiler[My understanding is that Akira,Tetsuo,and the other weird looking kids became pure psionic energy and reached a higher plane of existence.So Tetsuo is not dead,but he's no longer human either.]
It makes sense,especially since evolution is one of the central themes in Akira.Big fan of the movie too,I always wonder why some people hate it. BTW,Twelve > everybody. ;) |

It's a little open to interpretation, but I believe that spoiler[Tetsuo and the others had created a new universe, and had either become part of it or in Tetsuo's case became the "gods" of it. It was mentioned that Akira's power at its purest was very akin to the forces behind the big bang, in that it birthed a new universe.]

Wow it has been a while since I last saw this. The manga is better than its animated counterpart. Both mediums still have the same concept, spoiler[humans have within them the power to create a universe. This is very apparent in a few individuals, namely Tetsuo and Akira. Tetsuo's power was awakened after contact with the children. Of course at the end of the movie, I forgot who so bear with me, either Akira and/or Tetsuo succeeded in creating a new universe right in the middle of all that destruction. By then Tetsuo's power can not be contained within him and it consumed him. After all these events Kaneda gets a glimpse of his friend, Akira, and the kids transcending our plane of existance becoming something that can not be explained in words.]
It has been a long time since I last saw and read Akira but I still remember the important parts. This is my take on it. |
