Wiki can really surprise about stuff you didn't know about seiyuu. Like I found Jamie McDonnigal and Chris Patton are both gay. I think I was more surprised when Maile Flanagan, the voice of one of Japan's most popular ever series, Naruto, is a lesbian. Have you found it hard to (as he would say) "Believe it" when you read something about a seiyuu.
Second, I have sometimes looked up Masako "Son Goku" Nozawa on Wiki. Very popular seiyuu of now and then. Ikue "Pikachu" Ohtani is also famous. Sorry to say, Megumi-sensei, but these two are more famous overall than you. But, my friends, which is more famous? My thought is Goku himself/herself. Whoa, this is a long post. |

Your post is all over the place, it's not very clear. Are you asking if Masako Nozawa or Ikue Ohtani is more popular than Megumi Hayashibara?

I think he's asking who is more popular between Masako Nozawa and Ikue Ohtani, and believes both are more popular than Megumi Hayashibara, but I'm not too sure.
Between just those two I'd say Ikue Ohtani wins the popularity contest. A bit more range, better roles, and also the voice of Pikachu in both Japan and the US. Still, Megumi Hayashibara is by far more prolific than either; female Ranma and Faye Valentine as well as major roles in a lot of other series, and greatly talented to boot. Only other female seiyuu in her ranks both in pupularity and talent, in my opinion, would be Kikuko Inoue and Aya Hisakawa. |

At one time Kotono Mitsuishi (seiyuu of Sailor Moon and Misato Katsuragi) was insanely prolific and even surpassed both Megumi Hayashibara and Kikuko Inoue in raw number of characters done and lead character roles, but that was a while back. I am particularly fond of this thread since Ikue Ohtani is currenly my most favorite seiyuu but I didn't realize she was all that popular or prolific.

Eh? I'm surprised nobody mentioned Kawasumi Ayako. Look at her resume and it's obvious she's one of the most popular seiyuu right now. I think she's just passed her peak but will remain a top choice for a while still. Also note that she has her fair share of main/major roles.

Yea, those are some very good roles she has under her belt, and I'm glad their keeping her voice for the Kanon remake I don't think she's past her peak yet though, more like she still has a decent way to go before she hits it. And of course, we can't forget the rising seiyuu Hirano Aya She may not have a great deal of roles under her belt right now, but with roles such as Sumire from Canvas 2 and the ever popular Haruhi, she'll start to get a lot more better roles (kinda interesting to note, she was also a seiyuu in Tenshi no Shippo Chu! with Kawasumi Ayako). |

Depends on whom you ask. People who watch Pokemon or DBZ generally don't mind who the seiyuu are; on the other hand, those who watch NGE do. Furthermore, Pikachu can't sing, and DBZ watchers would rather hear songs performed by Hironobu Kageyama rather than Masako Nozawa (what kind of song do you expect Goku to sing?). However, female or feminine characters by Megumi Hayashibara give her countless chances to perform within and outside an anime.
Because this is not a "who's your favorite seiyuu" thread, although she's definately #1 of my favorite five (other four are Satsuki Yukino, Fumiko Orikasa, Kikuko Inoue and Aya Hisakawa -- last two mentioned by undeadben).
She is undoubtedly the brightest rising star. Being able to open a concert at Nippon Budokan is one of the greatest honors a Japanese singer could get. The first seiyuu who achieved this was Hekiru Shiina, followed by Nana Mizuki. However, thanks to the overwhelming popularity of Hare Hare Yukai (ED of SHnY), Aya Hirano, Minori Chihara and Yuko Goto were invited as special guests at Animelo Summer Live 2006 -OUTRIDE- on July 8th, 2006 (pictures available at Chihara's blog). Both Hirano and Chihara were so moved and cried. |

Well, I know there's at least one song where Ikue Ohtani sings as Pikachu (ending theme for Hey You, Pikachu!, the lyrics only consist of the word or a combination of the syllables "Pikachu")... I'm not sure if there's anymore, I think there may be one in Pokemon Channel but I can't remember... but I have a lot songs where Ikue Ohtani has sung as other characters.
Oh yes, I'm honored to have her perform a main character role in Galaxy Angel II. If I only knew she'd become this popular, I would have been more far more interested in seeing her at Tokyo Game Show 2005 (although, at the time, I didn't even know who I saw, I just knew they had to do with GAII...). |

I don't think singing ability should be the primary gauge of a seiyuu's vocal ability. Granted lots of seiyuu do typically sing songs for the anime that they are in and do them very well. Seiyuu's are actors and actresses primarily and musicians secondarily. So to say that Pikachu can't sing I find rather odd because you are ultimately talking about Ikue Ohtani and Ikue is still Ikue whether she's playing Pikachu or any other character. I am personally not familiar with Ikue Ohtani's musical career even though she is my most favorite vocal talent in Japan. But I can sure pick out her voice when she sings parts of the ending song to Sensei no Ojikan.

I agree. Unfortunately however, royalties from singing, not paychecks from acting, are their major sources of income, as well as an important indicator of popularity among hardcore fans -- in addition to watching anime, those are the people who would buy additional related merchandises e.g. OST + OP/ED singles. |

Ahh... that is something quite important that I had not realized. It's nice to learn something new everyday. Thank you dormcat.
