And I thought I was being sneaky when I snuck home rented anime tapes to watch at home (watching anime at the age of 9 was always a risk, what witht he nudity that my parents could walk in on, Even when watching Tenchi)
Heh, looks like kids in China are either gonna just stay up later at night, or start making more Hong Kong rips. lol

Keep in mind, that this is only from 5-8 PM. ANN's headline smacks of hyperbole.
Honestly, thanks to Teletoon, I still believe that Canada has it worse...

but see the bigger issue here is beyond anime, they're moving to stamp out pretty much anything foreign. they might as well be North Korea.

All people need to do is have a fast internet connection + computer and get them through fan sub group. Problem solved.

*grimaces* Y'know, the people there aren't all deprived or anything, and they can still get anime easily. In fact, the "big" government seems to be quite out of ordinary civialian's faces. Honestly I think people see Bush's influence more in the U.S. than Hu Jingtao's in China. But for goodness sake, does the Chinese government have to do anything else to make its name more...well... unappealing? Most people there will stay up sgnificantly past eight PM there and I doubt this will have a huge impact, but really - what's the point if people can still get what they want with little or no hassle? Politicians, how they perplex me.

This kind of confuses me. Aren't there a ton of foreign-made (specifically Japanese) cartoons that specifically outsource animation to China because it's so dirt cheap?
Doesn't this kinda hurt a little in that sense? I mean, I'm sure not quite as much as it would supposedly (in the CCP's twisted minds) help domestic animation studios, but still...

Yeah, but not everyone has access to a fast connection, and most people would rather have legit DVDs they can watch on a TV instead of some 20MB Quicktime movie they can only watch on their 17" monitor.
And about China - what bozos. They may just as well ban anything foreign and create a totalitarian regime that rules over the entire nation and eradicates all traces of foreign interaction? Want to attend college in America? The FBI will execute you. Thinking of going on vacation to France? You'll be considered a terrorist. Have a business trip to Germany? You'll be drafted into the military and sent to Lebanon.
Seriously, this is total BS. The entire Chinese population should impeach the ignorant dumbass who's currently in office and get him replaced with someone who's not so introverted about his own nation. Hell, not even we Americans are like that, yet everyone hates us. Go figure.

It is important to keep things in perspective - they're not banning anime, and discussions of other bad things the Chinese government does aren't really relevant. They're making protectionist rules to promote local animation studios by giving them priority for prime-time schedule slots. That may be bad, but it's in no way comparable to (for instance) having journalists with unpopular views mysteriously disappear, or putting the entire local Internet behind a restrictive firewall.
Canada has protectionist rules for radio and television in the shape of the "Canadian Content" laws, which require a certain percentage of everything on radio and television to be Canadian in origin. I believe they include schedule-related terms so that a broadcaster can't skirt the rules by, for instance, showing American shows during prime time and all the Canadian content in a block at 3am. These rules are somewhat controversial, but they're by no means universally condemned by Canadians. One thing that probably helps is that it's not implemented as absolute bans, but as percentage requirements - you can show American shows during prime time, but you can't show *only* American shows during prime time. Some very worthwhile Canadian TV shows and musical artists got their start because of having this kind of required airplay, and they never would have without it.
Nobody in the USA has a right to talk about their own country being superior in this respect, either. The USA routinely makes protectionist trade rules to support local industry in preference to foreign (e.g. against Canadian softwood lumber to support US lumber companies; against foreign Internet gambling venues to support US offline casinos), despite having signed treaties forbidding such actions; and it enforces government-mandated Internet censorship, too, despite having a Constitution that appears to forbid that kind of thing.
*All* national governments suck to some degree.

What about the "great firewall of China"? The Chinese government could start blocking sites like that, just like how they block other (controversial) sites. Also I seriously doubt that you can get a really fast internet connection in like, rural China, because you certainly can't at my parents' house in rural America (without a satellite service).

They don't really do anything for an older generation with promiscuity or a lot of gore, but some of the children's shows aren't too bad. Nothing worse than Fairly Odd Parents, if you want a comparison.
