See? Shoujo sells! What better reason than for FUNimation to license Ouran Host Club?

...

Still, though...this is a *bit* sad. Viz spent a fudgeload on promoting Naruto and it's now at its peak, yet Fruits Basket still outsold it...what bitter irony. I'd pity Viz if I didn't despise their business practices so much. -.-

I'd also praise TOKYOPOP if I didn't like them, either. :p

Heeeeeeelloooo. Sad? I don't think so. Though I don't think it's just girls buying into this series, which is why it's great. I think this appeals to both girls and boys.

Opening a can of worms here, but Manga sales trends don't nessecerally follow over into Anime, as far as the U.S goes.

Wow! Even better than last week? I would think the highest selling week for a manga would be the week of the release, but this is great.

I'd license a Shoujo manga and wait to see how it does before I'd even consider the anime. The Fruits Basket anime was hardly the best seller the manga is.

Well it must be a combine effort of both boys and girls. Cause there no way it would be that high with a smaller demographic only reading it...Which brings me to my next point......How many guys are actually reading this (Fruit Basket)? I am not but that basically because I don't read any manga, (other Monster/Blood/.Hack novels) so to me this is a huge deal that this manga could reach this high on the booklist.
Till next time,

Wouldn't this be a topic we discuss when Ouran High School Host Club reaches #24 on Booklist? Using one shoujo title to predict the success of another shoujo title is lunacy.

I don't know how many guys are actually reading Fruits Basket, but if it is anything like the reasons that I like it, I would imagine that many that enjoy certain shounen romances can appreciate this type of manga and respect and enjoy the vast refreshing differences.

I'm a guy and I can promise you that I read it! Anime smile It is one of my favorite manga titles and I am glad to see it succeed on many levels.

I figure it will now break Naruto's record for number of weeks on the list.

I'm reading it. It's one of at least a dozen shoujo titles I'm collecting.

The Fruits Basket anime was pretty popular and must have been a huge seller since FUNI even had a little campaign to try to get a second season made so they could license it.

Yes, some males buy Fruits Basket, but the majority of the fans are females. What I think this shows is how powerful the female demographic is in selling manga.

While, I don't think this entirely justifies the claim that shojo is now a hot selling item, I do think it exemplifies that is has great potential and not only shoenen, ninja stories can make it big. Hopefully, this will encourage companies to licence more shojo anime which is where we are lacking. There is and could be a much bigger market for it if advertised and promoted properly.
