I finished both the series and the movie and all I can say is "wow." What an amazing anime. The storyline is superb; nothing is left out, nothing is wasted. Everything fit in perfectly.
FMA was the first anime to actually move me to tears, you know, how you get that pain in your throat and stuff (spoiler[during the episode where Hughes dies]). Plus I'm crying while I'm writing this topic ![]() The ending of the movie was amazing, yet it left me dissapointed. They did the exact opposite of what you wanted to happen, yet I knew that because of that choice the creators of this anime made it into a true classic. The music also fit the theme of the series, and La arc 'n ciel's oppening to the movie (Link) was an amazing song. I've actually had that song on my Ipod for a while now. I don't have much more to say except that this is my favorite anime (actually tied with Honey and Clover). But some people did not like it as much as I did. I'd like to know what everyone else thinks about this series. |

I liked this series. I liked how it dealt directly with consequences and not just as something a villain must face, but consequences that can arrive from anyone's actions including the heroes; this is rare. The characters were all solid and the story almost conitnuously moved forward. There were a few annoying instances of reptetiveness and some issues with pacing, but not really distracting.
The magic was also a bit hoaky at times, but then I've spent a lot time reading about alchemy and literary alchemy, so I think that is just me being bothered with there being no real alchemy in the literal or symbolic sense, escpecially as the series does a good job with symbolism in other areas. Still, basically it was just me expecting too much. They did get a small part of the basic concept very very loosely correct. But again that is just me being nitpicky. The story overall was nicely written, and the animation was wonderful. I also loved the soundtrack and even listen to it occasionally while I'm driving. Not my favorite series, but very good, or actually I think I rated it excellent. Here's the last FMA thread, for some, uh, interesting reading, although there are some comments in there by others on the series, since you're interested. |

Word to big bird! That's what it is 'because'. (What is up with the auto fix? It ruins my slang.)
I felt exactly the same after watching the series. spoiler[When I saw the ending, I was like, NO NO NO! I wanted everyone to be together and happy. When either Al or Ed said, "Let's go on a journey again."(Or a similar idea)]I was like Hell NO! I still recall that moment like it was yesterday. Even though Fullmetal Alchemist was one of my first animes, I still cherish it like I saw it yesterday. I don't try to compare this anime to any other animes. This is the best ever because, just as you mentioned, nothing is wasted. All the episodes link together and come to one final resolution. Many viewers say that the storyline is not that good after the first half. I completely disagree. The storyline is excellent, no it's superb. It is seemingly confusing, but it is, in my opinion, purposely made that way in order for the movie to become conclusive for the series. I love the way The Conqueror of Shambalais conclusive. That alone makes the series that much better. Now I'm remembering Shakugan no Shana; I hope it too has movie that is sequential to the series' storyline. The music is lovely; The OP and ED themes go perfectly with the show. Also, because of the music, the picture of Ed and Al's mother is glued to my brain. A lot of anime otakus/nerds/geeks hate me for saying Fullmetal Alchemist is the best anime ever, but I don't giva F***. Really, they are just those people who love contradicting one's view just because they want to, and or they have nothing better to do in their miserable yet pathetic lives. Seriously, they even go on AIM and start having a mindless debate with me. I don't want to mention any names...it's just sad. The world's population of people with no lives just keeps growing. |

No, people don't "hate you" because you think Fullmetal Alchemist is the greatest anime ever; we just find you extremely irritating when you pressure your opinions on others and become angry with people who don't agree with you. I don't think it's the "best anime ever", but it's up there in my book. One LARGE grievence that I have with the anime is just the sheer ridiculousness of the fact that nearly EVERYONE comes back. There were way way too many characters that should have just been gone after their short, there is no way all of those people would have survived to the end in the roles they were in. I was left extremely disappointed that so many of the characters died or left, and then were magically resurected to fit into some kind of forced dramatic plot.
Particularly spoiler[the whole Layla deal, why did it have to be someone Ed knew? why couldn't it just have been some random stranger? Bringing her in particular bothered the hell outta me, because it totally didn't fit her persona; so when you see her again it's almost immediately obvious what is going on. The other thing was Rose... it seemed more than a little forced the way they brought Rose back into the story with her and then have her tag along with everyone. I thought it would have been infinitely better if she just made her cameo back into the show with her baby and then got crushed under rubble trying to help Ed. It's not like I didn't like her, she was my favorite character in the whole show, but come on. Forced is forced.] |

FMA is one of my favorite series, but I feel that the ending and the movie are very flawed. The end of the TV series(the episodes with 'Rewrite' and 'I Will') were the Dante episodes, and even thoug hI found the ideas good, I felt that another three episodes added onto the series, but the same amout of content would be better. A lot of stuff was thrown at you towards the end, and althoug hthe ideas were good, they seemed a bit rushed and disaorganized at times. However, like the rest ofthe TV series, the emotions are portrayed very well. The characters act realisticaly, and the voice acting in both Japanese and English were very well done and full of emotions!
However...the movie. Unlike the TV series, the characters seemed emotionless. Ed seemed so bland and serious compared to what he was like on the show. Sure, he probably matured some, but he didn't act like Ed. He seemed emotionless(though I think Romi Park was able to put as much energy and emotion into him as she could with the boring lines she was given, and was able to make him less emotionless). Heidrich was an interesting character idea, but he wasn't developed well enough. He was given a real personality-all you knew was that spoiler[he was the real world version of Al, and he liked to create rockets.] And Noa reminded me too much of Rose tha tshe seemed boring and uninspired. I think the character in the movie with the life in him was Alphonse. He was cheerful and sweet, and Rie Kugimiya's performance was done perfectly, with a lot of energy and emotion! However, all of the rest of the characters seemed to be so dull compared to the TV series. This really hit home in my least favorite scene in the movie, when spoiler[Ed first arrives in his world, and Al, Winry, and Schiezka are there. Ed notices Winry and Schiezka right away, but it takes him awhile to realize who Al is. And then he's just like "We must defeat the villain! If I hadn't seen my little brother in two years, I'd hug him and tell him how I missed him, not blow him off to stop a villain! Ed doesn't even recognize Al! He just ignores him except when it is time to fight! Grrrr! Tha tmade me so mad!] And there are a lot of contradictions and plotholes in the movie. For example, spoiler[The Thule Society is able to open the gate, and Ed is able to close it in the real world. However, alchemy is impossible in out world, and opening and closing the gaterequire alchemy.] Also, spoiler[Col. Mustang is seen is his first apperance in the movie in a cabin in the middle of nowhere-with no explanation of how he got there. Plothole much?] I found the FMA movie to be a mediocre ending to an amazing show. |

Hmm really I love the movie as an ending to the series....but then again different strokes for different folkes. Anyhow let me dive into some of the things you said. First off spoiler[Mustang I thought the whole scene with Mustang was pretty amazing, I thought that Mustang being stuck in the middle of nowhere was fitting. How he got there is there kinda simple, he basically demoted himself so that he wouldn't fight anymore. Part of reason why he doesn't use alchemy and uses the flint to light the cigar. ] As for Edward spoiler[Being trap in a world that isn't your for sometime force you into a serious nature. Meaning if you spent all your time trying to figure out how to get home (AKA Studying, Reading) you would be a serious person I would think. But you are right concerning Heidrich I thought that his character really could of been developed a lot more but it didn't necessarily ruin the movie for me. Till next time, Delta Kiral ] |

I like how the original poster wrote...
![]() As for me, I've yet to see the movie, but friends claim that it is very dissappointing. I wasn't happy with the ending of the series and my high hopes for closure might over-ride whatever else the movie has to offer. "The death" was very emotional, and I love shows that take themselves seriously, only to suddenly have a stupid moment, which is actually funny to me unlike other shows who are just trying too hard to be funny the whole series that end up just being plain boring and repetitive. Great series, but I hated the pacing, it felt too slow and left me bored just waiting for the next big plot twist...but had some great fight scenes. My views on the show may also be like this because I watched the [as] run so i had to wait a week to see a new episode. I know re-watching a series, specially in a marathon, really exposes the series for what it is... either boring crap or something you can't put down. |

There is a retail forum here. Also if you were going to post a link to AnimeNation I think you could have done it directly, and lastly if you break it down, all 11 volumes for 281.94 is a lot more than you'd pay for them individually at places like deepdiscountdvd.com, actually, it adds up to 199.54 for the first 11 volumes. I've just seen about 5 or 6 chapters, but I loved it. It's a shame that the channel that was broadcasting it took it off the air. Why is anime so hated in Colombia? I wish I knew it
