I was on the Funimation forums a few days ago discussing about
"Case Closed- The Timed Bombed Skyscraper". Another member and I were saying that Funi's dub of the movie was not as great as the original. But then another member said that "the Japanese tend to be fans of the American dubs, and sometimes feel that the American dub is done better than the original Japanese versions". Now, I kind of find that hard to believe, I mean how could the creator of an anime think that the American dub of his/her anime is better than the original. I wonder if you think that's true too. Here's the conversation if you want to look it up. http://community.funimation.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=10727&mpage=1&key=[/url] |

Didn't Cowboy Bebop's creator say he prefers the series in English?

Ya, me too. Actually, I don't believe it... maybe. It depends on what "the Japanese" was refering to though. If it's refering to the anime fans and/or people who actually watch the shows in Japan, I already know it's a load of crap. If it's refering to the people who actually worked on the show and/or its creators, well, I suppose it could be possible... I just find it very, very surprising... And I'm somewhat doubting it unless some more proof actually comes out. Also, it should probably be noted that the person who said that was mod on the Funi forums, so it wasn't just some random user. |

I've heard equally unsubstantiated rumors that the creators of Ghost Stories liked the English version better, but until we get a representative sample of creators' opinions about English dubs, we can't really answer this question. But, if we can like anime in a language other than our own, why can't they?

I would at least say that, in general, creators of anime probably like the dub about as well as the Japanese. Someone asked Mizushima how he felt about the English dub at NDK, and he said that he felt the voices matched well with how it felt in Japanese, and that he had met some of the English voice actors and liked them.
The only thing he said that he felt was different was that the 'rythmn' felt different, but he said that considering they're two different languages not much can change that. He could've just been being polite, but I think he was being honest. |

Makes you wonder what Eiichiro Oda thinks about OP's dub.

Let's look at what was actually said...
Now, let's put it into perspective. - Most Japanese are probably not exposed to many English-dubbed anime - Most Japanese can't understand spoken English at normal VA speed - Most Japanese would be hard-pressed to notice bad English voice acting Also, the original statement used all sorts of qualifiers, such as "tidbit", "tend to", and "sometimes" (x2). There is nothing profound here and nothing in the original statement was apparently meant to be painted with such a large brush. This was most likely at least partly a PR statement, and while I don't doubt that some Japanese enjoy and perhaps even prefer one or more American dubs I must say that we seem to be reading a bit too much into this at this point. In the US, many anime voice acting jobs go to "B" list non-union workers who have at least one other job to support them. Who in their right mind would expect American dubs to honestly rival the Japanese originals? |

Ahhahahahaha. 4Kids made it sound like they were working with the Japanese studio when they announced that they had licensed it, but I really doubt they actually did. If they DID, I just have one thing to say. ...What were you thinking??? |

Actually, all of these reversed can apply to American audiences also, yet we still have sub fans. Although, despite what it seems on the internet (where it's almost the opposite), most people who watch anime prefer it dubbed, and sub fans are in the minority. There's also the part of the "Japanese voices" being the original, as to why some people prefer anime subbed. This wouldn't apply to the reverse arguement. I also know that many (if not most) Japanese prefer to watch foreign films and animation in their original language. I didn't see a single dubbed American cartoon in Japan... I know they do exist, but all of the ones I saw were in English.
They can, and I'm sure they do. I just doubt it's what they tend to like. Last edited by PantsGoblin on Fri Oct 27, 2006 4:54 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I agree. The reason I like the anime dubbed, is to see the way the characters talk and how they sound. For example take Inuyasha. The way Inuyasha sounds and speaks in the Japanese, and the American versions both fit his character. All due to superb Japanese, and American voice acting. |

I've heard that Hayao Miyazaki prefers the French dub of Porco Rosso over the original Japanese recording. And I remember Kazuya Tsurumaki saying he liked the FLCL dub, particularly the English voice actress for Haruko, because it was so similar to the original.
As far as Japanese fans are concerned, well... I had two Japanese roommates during college and I kind of sensed a double standard. They laughed at the thought of Japanese animation dubbed into English and I could never watch any of my old Streamline tapes in peace ("Haha, that voice sounds so horrible!"), but they had a bunch of Disney movies on tape that were dubbed into Japanese, and they watched those all the time. So I don't really know what to think there. I guess elitism in anime fandom exists everywhere. |

I think this situation is more title specific than in general. Sure, most creators should like the dubs of their original creations, it would be very bad publicity if they were to reject it and say negative things. However, if you were to ask a question about whether they liked their original better or the dubbed better in comparison, then they'd probably have to deal with different series differently. No language is perfect, and they all sound better in different circumstances. In the American context/culture, then using English would probably sound a lot more natural, while in the Japanese context/culture, then using Japanese would probably sound more natural. Of course, those are just the extremities, but in the case of more neutral contextual work, then both can be just as good, so it's really not a big deal if one were to like the English over Japanese or vice versa.

I thought I read somewhere that he likes the dubs according to the setting of the anime (so the western settings he likes the dubs and the Japanese settings he likes the originals.) I may be mistaken though. I think the answer to 'Do anime creators like American dubs more?' would be 'No, except with some exceptions.' I'd say a large amount of anime creators have very little to do with the dubs and often don't speak English well enough to want to see the dubs. |

I know modern Japanese like/want to speak English. Maybe that has something to do with it.
