I haven't thought of a snappy way of expressing this, so bear with me! (This post is prompted by nbahn's thread on "informing" rather than "entertaining", but is about something different.)
I once had a conversation with a friend about the third part of "The Lord of the Rings" where he said he objected to it because it contained were such boring passages. I said (and I believe this) that there were boring bits but that they had a function, namely to communicate the dreariness and monotony of the journey being described in the text. To which my friend responded that this was not a legitimate kind of mimesis. So... I'm wondering if people can think of examples of anime which bore, annoy or otherwise p.o. the viewer to what could be argued were aesthetic ends? And were they successful? I'm thinking of two:
Alien Nine was also notable for its ending, which cut the story brutally and disappointingly short almost in mid-scene --- and yet indicated what was going to happen next in a credit sequence, as if taunting the viewer! I felt ripped off, as if my identification with the story and characters had been violated, which I did relate to the fates of some of the characters... [EDIT: Thought I'd make it easier for every body and just fill in the rest of the p. and o. so no one is misled. -TK] |

Texhnolyze. Probably the ur-example. The first episode had just six lines of dialogue, and the rest weren't that much better. The whole show was supposed to be meaningful and deep and tried to exude an aesthetic air. But instead it was boring, pretentious and failed to hide a shallow plot. There were lots of symbols, but even the ones I sort of knew about (like the fox-masks) fell flat. As for the themes, they could have been interesting but were wasted as heck.

What's P.O?
Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze - All of them may bore the audience because of lack of dialogue, not much action or static environment. That happens for most of the episodes. Perfect Blue - Very confusing and trippy all the way through. I wasn't too fond of drawing either but it seemed to be Satoshi Kon's style. It complemented with the overall mood of the show. Boogiepop Phantom - I don't think I finished the show or I can't remember how the ending went. The first few episodes were interesting and then it sort of bored me. I'm assuming it means "pissed off". It would be very strange if ailblentyn was referring to "peak oil". |

That's a relief. I was afraid at first that it meant "Practically Orgasm." |

Oh man, I've been watching Kaiji lately, and that poor guy Kaiji (aka the main) just keeps getting screwed over by idiots and backstabbers. Now part of me wants to punch Kaiji in the face for even attempting to trust them in the first place, but the other half of me wants to punch those backstabbing a-holes. In the end I really just want to punch everyone in that entire show in the back of the head, but at the same time I'm also really enjoying myself, makes an odd scenario of liking the show a lot but being mad at almost all of the characters.

Chobits really got me angry with caring for a humanoid computer over a REAL human being. That just doesn't make any sense to be when some of the characters would rather pick the computer over a human. Its scary how we are seeing this now, with Love Plus and other dating sims in Japan catching more thunder. Why choose a humanoid computer with fake emotions over a real-life human beings that have real feelings for you? Boggles the mind.

I think it was supposed to be social commentary that there exist people who - if given the choice - really would pick a "perfect" robot over a flesh-and-blood human being. It's sad but true. |

Two words: target audience. Those shows are aimed at titillating a target demographic, and don't really care what people who are not in their target audience think of them. |

I agree with classical zawa's interpretation of Kaiji. I think that this show fits the bill quite nicely. The entire cast irritated me with how slimey/pathetic they were, hoever this irritation guided me towards the (obvious) point of the show, rock paper scissors...oops I mean social commentary.

Hmm, this thread started alright, but the tone of it seems to be in danger of changing from "What anime do you think seem to deliberatly antagonize the audience" to "These shows really antagonize me and I hate them for it"
Looking at my own shelf and going from left to right, I'd say Betterman is a good contender, with it's weird mix of strange character designs, a main character who for all intents and purposes, is a japanese shaggy. Ugly looking and unmarketable mechs (hard to believe that this came from the people who made Gaogaigar, eh?). Straight up Lovecraftian horror and weirdness, and lots and lots of technobabble. Still like it though. We could add Revolutionary Girl Utena easily. Starts a little odd but fairly stanard at first. Then we start getting into the repetetive, very lengthy and odd stock footage. The fixation on cars (That sprout from the ground upright). An extremely muddled background fairytail, which seems to explain both alot and nothing at the same time. Bizarre cuts. And entire 13-episode story arc which the characters all forget when it's all over. The shadow girls, the stopwatch, the episode where Nanami turns into a cow, the episode where Nanami thinks she's laid an egg (That hatches into King Ghidorah!?) incest, the movie, the movie, and also the movie...The ENTIRE SCENE WITH THE "POISONED" COOKIES!! Probably my #2 favorite anime of all time, but you can tell they were deliberately messing with our heads and laughing manaically all the way |
