Or are my eyes just going funny? Seriously though, sometimes the animation looks a bit weird and poorly defined, then it looks sharp again at some other parts - is it like this throughout, and is it meant to be like this?

My FX bootleg of it is definitely blurry, but I was hoping the R1 would be much better, since I was planing to put in an order for it later this week. Are you referring the the R1?

The animation is smooth and soft coloured, but the lines are real and defined. If it is blurry then likely you either have a bootleg or a faulty disc.

It should look like:-

if it doesn't then something is wrong.

Heh, yeh, it is a crappy bootleg from ebay, so it may well be that. Although theres a rather fine distinction between 'smooth and soft coloured' and 'blurry' and it looks sharp in places, so I can't really tell. I guess I'll just need to buy a real copy to find out.

Look at the image I posted, the colours are all self contained, they dont 'bleed' or 'fade' into the backgrounds or other colourings nearby. While the palette is limited in tones for the majority of non-Reki scenes there is definite distinction between each block of colour. The light on Kuu's hair from the halo is distinct from the similar cream of Nemu's jumper and Reki's hair is noticably seperate from the very similar Kana's. If you're image has indistinct ends to each of these kinds of things then you've got a problem.

What you'll notice is the limited use of shading, in favour of highlighting. So to create the effect of shadows the animation instead uses patches of lighter colour on some areas rather than use patches of darker colour on others, while obvious shading; such as Nemu's head; is still present there is a noticable lack of shading in the animation in general. hence the 'Smooth and Soft' combined with the largely pastel colouring makes for some of the best anime I've ever seen.
