Here's a Japanese language newsclip on that "Pop Travel" otaku tour thing that's been advertised on ANN a few times. Though I admit the tour looked kinda fun, I don't think I could deal with only doing anime related things in Tokyo. And the lack of the social graces that these people have is pretty amusing. Huzzah for an unwashed girl walking around in cosplay! Huzzah for a forty year old man attempting to sing chirpy anime songs in eanest!

Trying to think how I should dress when I go there. Wonder if the locals would get upset if I wore traditional clothing. edit. Yes, funny. Kind of want to do a tour like that. If this is how I get to Kyoto, so be it. Be like the kids in Maburaho in Kyoto. teacher takes you to where yu are supposed to be, and then they all run away. Bleh. Japan is so much more than just anime and manga... They're missing out so much. I hope to travel the entire country on foot as soon as I get out of college and save enough money. Some things I'm dying to see: sakura trees, the countryside, Tokyo, temples and shrines, festivals, etc.
Wearing traditional clothing might be rare, but I'm sure it won't upset them. I bet some people still wear traditional clothing to those festivals held in temples (like in certain anime). /omg, the maid waitress that said "meow" was seriously kawaii. |

Uhhhh, no, I wouldn't wear traditional clothing there. You'd just look like the Japan-idolizing tards in the news clip. You might get away with it if you were at a festival but otherwise people will just think you are a weird gaijin.
Yeah, it was cute when she said nyaa. I'm still curious about how the maids would treat a girl customer in a maid cafe. I couldn't tell if the female otaku accompanied the 40 year old virgin to that maid cafe. |

Yes, please don't try to wear traditional Japanese clothing unless there's a festival. But that was a great video. it was funny how they were trying to get their Japanese right and all. The thing about "gaijins" in Japan is that they're not afraid to try and sound out their Japanese. If only the Japanese would try to sound out their English

Thanks A LOT for posting this. I've been waiting to see this for half a year. I was in that tour. Tch, I don't see myself anywhere in that. I don't really talk that much at all, so I guess I can see why I wasn't in it. And I didn't attempt to speak Japanese at all either, which they seemed to find amusing.
Of course we did more then just touring Akiba. They only chose to show the most "interesting" things though. |

You all laugh but have you ever been to the Tower of London during tourist season?
Everywhere you look there are dozens of Japanese, Chinese and Korean tourists, clicking their camera's, buying the cheap, nasty little souvernirs and being given tours by staff who are laughing inwardly. At least these guys tried to speak Japanese. Also never try to give directions to a lost Chinese man on Dartmoor... "Steeperton Tor is that way," (points) "Yes, Yes, Steep!" "Errr, No you want to go THAT way," (points again) etc for about half an hour...tourists are great arent they... |

A fanny pack AND a backpack! How much stuff did he need to carry around? And yeah, I'm from NYC so I see tourists all the time. But these guys, all they talked about in Japanese was anime. "Yan ken pon!" (sic) hahaha. |

 The guy pronounced it wrong in the video. Also, he inadvertantly said 'shit' as well.
If you didn't realize how much the Japanese announcer dude was mocking the otaku, check out the translated video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIbPgEyOGs4&search=otaku_usa (It won't let me link to utube...) There's nothing wrong with liking anime, but it gives Americans who are interested in Japanese culture a bad reputation. I hate that when I mention I take Japanese, people automatically associate me with this type of fan. Seriously, if you're going to Japan, you're going to stand out no matter what. You don't have to, say, dress in Japanese traditional clothing or try to sing anime songs in some sad attempt to befriend a Japanese person. It ain't gonna work. Because despite what some people may tell you, watching anime is not a commen practice among Japanese above the age of twelve or so. |
