I've just been wondering what makes an h-game an h-game and what makes a date-sim a date-sim. I've also noticed that there are quite a few anime based on such games. I'm just curious as to what they are as I've read about alot of referrences to them in the online manga MegaTokyo.

Ya, I don't really consider the "Newgrounds" ones to be dating sims. I don't really know what to call them, they're kind of like datings sims with only 1/100 (if even that) of the story and added RPG like battles.

Both of them are basically the same idea except one has adult scenes and the other doesn't. Sometimes an h-game can be made into a dating sim with no hentai scenes. Happens most of the time when they're brought over to the PS2 or the like.

Most of the one's I've played involve mostly reading text and making choices that affect the outcome and ending of the game. Basically if you're nice to a certain girl/boy you'll most likely get their ending. Sometimes mini-games are thrown in. Most also have set backgrounds and nicely drawn character's that appear with various expressions. Obtaining all the high quality CG scenes in the game also plays a role in dating sims. I attempted to play Popotan in Japanese (not understanding the language) and while I didn't understand 60% of what was going on, I still enjoyed it. I never got all the endings though, couldn't figure out how to get all them. I mostly get the feeling of reading a book when playing them. A book that has audio and high quality visuals to go along with them. All of the one's I've played have great stories too.

Anyone know a site where I could play a H-Game or dating sim? Or is that illegal?

Well ya, it's illegal and against the rules here too. I know where to download some dating sims but I don't think I've ever downloaded them. The files are too big and it takes a while to finish them and I don't like something that big being on my computer for that long. All of the ones I've played I've either imported or bought out of the few that have been licensed here domestically.

jlist.com sells 'em. They've got ads for those types of games on this very site.

H-Games = Hentai Games, a sort of game that is not good for your health... erm... I mean, just a typical game where your goal is to just get the girl you want. No meaning to the story at all. In short, A game based on perverts, the pervertedness is accompanied by the story (if there is any story at all). Those games you see on the net where all you need to do is please the girl so you can... No comment... Wink

Eroge or Erotic Games = Ok, I must admit it... my favorite anime was based on this one... anyway... in contrast with H-Game, Eroge are famous for its heart moving story. Though the H-Scene is a little bother most of the time. An example of these are, the original version of Air and Kanon, One, Shuffle!, Izumo, Mizuiro, Hour Glass of Summer, Canvas 2, Fate/Stay Night... Ok that's enough, I think I'm showing my pervertedness Razz (Anyway... I like them for their great story)

Date-Sim = I don't know much about this, but I think this can be classified as H-Game, Eroge and Ren-Ai all at once. A good sample of this is Tokimeki Memorial. A game where you have to choose the right selection to further your development with the girl you want to date. Maybe I can safely say that H-Games, Eroge and Ren-Ai games are Date-Sim games.

Ren-Ai = Most of this games are from Eroge. Let's say, when a certain Eroge becomes famous, the company who made it will port it to the console (PS2, DreamCast, etc.) removing all the H-Scene and replacing them with bonus scenes and adding the voice feature, sometimes even changing the scenario. Anyway, if you're a fan of H-Games and Eroge, you might heard of Key, Typemoon, Studio E.go, Jast, etc. they're popular for their work of art stories.

Kinetic/Visual Novel = you don't need to choose anything, all you need to do is sit, listen and read. Just imagine yourself reading a novel while listening to a music that changes mood as you turn the pages and with matching SFX. Samples of this are, Planetarian and other Doujin novels. Eroge and Ren-Ai games can be considered as Visual Novel too, why? the title says it all... Visual. You're not just reading anymore... you're looking at the facial expression and the background that makes the game.

I hope I'm correct on this though Anime smile

I would think the difference between hentai games and date sims are there's nudity in hentai, be it sex or just naked girls. Dating sims you can get down to bras and panties.

i agree with dgreater1 most parts. other than the Visual Novel part.

H-Games is all about sex( for perverts)

some Date-Sim can be h-game, but some date-sim games have no sex scenes. like Ai Yori Aoshi and animundi - Dark Alchemist and there aremany psp, ps2 date-sim games have no sex scenes too.

Visual Novel, you still have to choose things. Fata stay night, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni are consider Visual Novel and some people think they are hentai game too. i played FSN, there is nothing to see until like the end.

I think that just closed the conversation. You're right, there's the answer right there. Unless you buy something from an actual game store, and not Akihabara, it's an Eroge!

An H-game (or Ero/Erotic game, or whatever you want to call it): a pornographic game. It may or may not be a dating sim, it may or may not have an actual story, it may or may not be 'heart moving'. That stuff is not relevant. It just means its a porn game.

A Dating sim: you have a number of potential partners that you can date and get to know. The games may or may not have porn and often times there are adult versions and all-ages versions of the games.

A Visual Novel: a novel on the computer with pictures to go with it. Usually involves making choices (like a choose-your-own-adventure novel) but not necessarily. They may or may not contain pornographic content.

And not all H-games are animated either.
