Well it's official. My guess it will be the standard, I'm getting old, I've achieved everything I've wanted and more etc. this will definitely still be an interesting watch.

Lets have him go back to tv series. Hi retirement apparently is only form super time consuming movies, remember he makes movies with traditional animation, frame by frame, hand drawn (ink and paint included).

In the 2000s he did combine digital + hand drawn but since ponyo he went back to full traditional hand drawn animation, it takes an enormous effort and he is the kind that overlooks the smallest detail.

I have seen a glimpse of the enormous effort of doing ponyo in full traditional animation when I visited the Ghibli museum a couple years back.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponyo

Quote:
Miyazaki was intimately involved with the hand-drawn animation in Ponyo. He preferred to draw the sea and waves himself, and enjoyed experimenting with how to express this important part of the film.[11] The level of detailed drawing present in the film resulted in 170,000 separate images—a record for a Miyazaki film

I saw literally a mountain of those drawings at the museum, from floor to ceiling, and I am sure those were a fraction of the work.

So yea, I can see why is is now retiring, hopefully, only from films.

I'm expecting something more along the lines of "anime is dying" and "kids these days".

I had already timeshifted the Japanese niconama so I can watch later. But I guess I'll try to catch the English audio version as well.

I hear when Tomino retires, he's just going to open fire on the audience.
