I have only the first DVD of My Hime but I have a question.
I know that "hime" in the series refers to the girls' powers and in Japanese it means "Princess". "Otome" in Japanese means "maiden", if I'm correct.
So what is "Otome" refer to in the My Otome series? Does it refer to the powers of the girls as well?
****
OFF TOPIC: BTW as you all know, Tom Cruise named is daughter "Suri" according to this radio station I listen to, "suri" in Japanese means "pickpocket" And in other languages: to tell a woman to 'go away' and "long nose"! If these are true, methinks Tommy should have done a bit more name investigating!

It does refer to their powers.
HiME stands for Highly-advanced Materialization Equipment (horrible acronym lol, but it works)
Well as for Otome, there's two different spellings. The kanji for "oto" in Japanese look like a "z"(I can't type kanji, but it's pretty much a z), so the name is actually My zHiME(or My Otohime, the "hi" is silent.) But, zHiME and Otome are pronounced the same way.So the acronym is: z-type Highly-advanced Materialization Equipment.

Ah Ha!
Thanks! Now I'll just have to wait about a year for that title to come out!

So far Bandai only has My Hime though and who knows when they'll pick up the sequel. I'm seeing Hime for the first time on DVD as well. It's pretty good so far, I'm looking forward to the rest.

For the record: Mai HiME is a play on words: It literally means "Dancing Princess" but is also the name of the main character (Mai, who is a HiME. Nagi calls her "Mai HiME" a few times in the series).
Mai Otome, aside from the whole zHiME thing mentioned earlier, has another meaning. Otome does indeed mean maiden, like a virginal woman. In the series, Otome lose their powers if they have sex with a man: Therefore they are all maidens. So the title means "Dancing Maiden". Also, Mai is an Otome in the series, so again, it could be a referance to her name, although she really doesn't have a large part in the series, so it's probably mostly just for continuity with the first series.
And yeah, I dunno why they changed "Mai HiME" to "My HiME" for the English version. It doesn't make any sense: her name is still Mai, so it would have been fine to leave it in the original format. Sure, the play on words would have been lost on English viewers, but 'My HiME' doesn't have any special meaning either, so. Even the reviewer here on ANN mentioned that.

Agreed there really was no reason to change it, but when taken in the possessive form of the word, "my" does have meaning for instace Nagi calling her "my hime" like he's saying he owns her and making a play of words on her name which of course gets her ticked.

Also, for the most part, the Otome in Mai Otome get their powers through use of technology and a "Robe"; their powers are not innate like the HiMEs in the first series. You can see this in later episodes when Nagi & Smith's cannon knocks out the Otome Certification System--Shizuru, Natsuki, and most of the others become unable to use their Otome powers.

that and the series makes it clear in the first several episodes that the otome powers are conferred upon the otome-trainee, not innate. No need to wait for later eps to see that .
