Suomi is actually the finnish word for their country, it simply means Finland. So they could hardly have found a more finnish sounding name

Sometimes it's nice to just sit back, relax, and watch a simple story; or stories as this series contains. This series probably won't sell as well as it deserves; which is a real shame. I found Karin's story from the first volume especially moving.
I'm looking forward to watching vol 2 and eventually vol 3. |

The finnish language is also called Suomi. But yeah, though it isn't that common, I'd say it's still quite Finnish. |

It wouldn't be the first time. The full name of the heroine in Time Stranger Kyoko is Kyoko Suomi. Arina Tanemura (the mangaka) is a fan of the Moomintrolls so it was apparently a sly reference to their country of origin.
Anyway, while Suomi is a Finnish surname (and according to the phonebook not that uncommon) I'm kinda wondering if it's used as the given name or surname in Diamond Dust Drops? Is she actually half-Japanese since her other name is Kitano? |

Suomi seems to be her first name, which is, well, not unheard of but very odd. (Since 1900, only 43 Finnish children have been named Suomi; almost 90% of them were born before the 1940's and about 3/4 were male, so...)
Then again, I got slightly interested in this apparent "lazy naming" and did some more research on the anime. It seems that Suomi's best friend is called Hanna Järvinen, which is a perfectly Finnish name, so nothing lazy there. Since Suomi seems to be an actual Japanese girls' first name, as well, I'm also inclined to think that she is half Japanese. (Though she has blonde hair - but hey, this is anime.) |

Yeah I was thinking first name too. On the subject of finns in anime; the only other appearance (of a half finn) I have seen was in the last episode of Boys Be... known only as "Chiharu". How uncommon are (half) finns in anime anyway? Even two seems like a lot too me... |

Well, there is always Katri, Girl of the Meadows, which is based on an old, more or less forgotten Finnish novel (more info on the novel and series in Finnish here).
Other references to Finland and Finns in anime have been collected at least here (once again in Finnish). The funniest reference I have seen was the very weird love letter in Jubei-chan (could that be called Babelfish-Finnish?). 
(Correction: In my previous message, I forgot that the Population Register Centre's Name Service doesn't differentiate between first and second given names. I'd guess most of the Suomi's in the records were actually second or third names - there is more tolerance for weirdness with those. )
