It's worth it I think although I would say it's disappointing as far as Ghibli films go. It's still a good movie but it has some serious plot, pacing and development flaws.

Yes, I would buy it, if you like Miyazaki films. I thought it was a great movie, great characters, story, and all around enjoyable.

Also to be honest I think this is probably one of, if not, my favorite Miyazaki films, I definately like it better than mononoke. Actually you know what this is my favorite, then Castle in the sky, Spirited away, and so on.

This is definetly worth the buy, Billy Crystal is awesome in this movie, while howl's moving castle isn't my favorite(Princess Monoke you rock my socks), it's one of my favorite from Miyazaki definetly worth a rent at least. But if you're a collector I would say buy this dvd.
Till next time,

Ah ha! Someone asked a question about Howl! Good good. People are sick of hearing me rave about Howl's Moving Castle so it's nice to find a new listener.

To say the least, I bought Howl's the day it was released on DVD and have watched it five times since. I'd watch it a few more times if I didn't have homework. It is by far my favourite Miyazaki film.

The animation is consistent with other Miyazaki films so in other words, I thought the animation was fantastic! Detailed artwork with fanscinating colours.

The soundtrack is awesome. They played music that coincided with the particular scene and created a very harmonious effect.

The story was, imo, creative and captivating. It was enough to make me feel like I was taken to another magical world and I enjoyed the journey. However, as others have said, the pacing is somewhat strange, although not problematic imo. Also, the ending is rather rushed and I thought it was also rather forced spoiler[especially when Sophie kisses Turniphead and he turns into a prince to solve all the problems with the war. It's too much of the "kiss the frog" cliche.] I mean, how Disney can you get? But that was the only problem I had with it.

Finally, the reason I like the movie so much is generally because Howl is so HOT!!! Oh yeah! Takuya Kimura has such an amazing voice and I've been watching him even before anime so it was cool to hear him as the voice of Howl.

To summarize, Howl's Moving Castle is definately worth at least renting even if you're not going to buy it.

I would have to disagree with you, Spirited Away is the best movie--- it rocks my socks (i know it is a bad come back!!)

But yes, I would definately buy Howl's Moving Castle. It is not the best Miyazaki film, but is still very good. The animation is terrific. If you like fantasy and romance, it would be a perfect fit. I will have to say, one part within the movie did bore me, but right afterwards Miyazaki showed my favorite part of the book.

GO MARKL!

I seem to be the only one who disagrees here- I didn't enjoy Howl's Moving Castle very much. I walked into the theater expecting another instant classic masterpiece like Spirited Away.

I can't count the number of times I was turning to my friends beside me with the most puzzled expression, and they all mirrored me. So much of it seemed so spontanious and lacking explanation.

The animation is wonderful, the characters are very well done (especially my favourite, Howl himself), and the sountrack is great from what I remember, but the storyline seemed so chaotic.

Maybe my friends and I are just confused people, though the people in front of us were exchancing looks exactly when we were, so I can't be sure.

I'm probably not going to buy it, but I may rent it to try and solve this mystery of mine- what exactly made it confusing? I saw it when it first came out, so I don't quite remember. There was something about the main character's spontanious age growths and shrinks, and no one seemed to notice or care.

Anyway, I suppose I would have suggested trying it as well, though probably for rent before purchasing. It may be worth it just to look at, but other than that, it was a disapointment to me. Mad

I could not possibly agree more. The movie was an undeniable triumph of artwork and imagery but it was also greatly hindered by a back-story that appeared to be something other than finished and an anticlimactic finale that almost seemed to insult my intelligence and trivialize the prior events of the movie.

I also find myself agreeing with some of the more critical comments Roger Ebert made about Howl's:

While the movie contains delights and inventions without pause and has undeniable charm, while it is always wonderful to watch, while it has the Miyazaki visual wonderment, it's a disappointment, compared to his recent work.

Sophie, old or young, never quite seems to understand and inhabit this world; unlike Kiki of the delivery service or Chihiro, the heroine of "Spirited Away," she seems more witness than heroine. A parade of weird characters comes onstage to do their turns, but the underlying plot grows murky and, amazingly for a Miyazaki film, we grow impatient at spectacle without meaning.

Mr. Ebert gave Howl's what I would consider a mediocre review and a numeric rating of 2.5 stars (out of 4) while he had previously given both Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke gushingly positive reviews along with full 4 star ratings.

To me, Howl's certainly looks like a Miyazaki film but the story seems to be of much lower caliber such that it cannot be considered to be in the same rank as Spirited Away or Castle in the Sky. Perhaps you can explain why you enjoyed it so much. (Please don't take this as any sort of attack; I'm just curious to know more).

Like any true Miyazaki fan, I bought Howl's as a preorder and received it several days before the release date. So there.

The artwork was indeed impressive. It's just too bad that even groundbreaking visuals cannot overcome a disjointed and ultimately unfulfilling plot. Watching Howl's lumbering abode make its way across the land was a visual treat for the eyes while watching Howl's lumbering plot was something of a chore for the mind.

I felt the same way about most other Miyazki films. However, this one just couldn't shake me from my disbelief and it left me surprisingly unimpressed as a result.

The ending is precisely where Howl's could have redeemed itself. Instead, the ending was where everything just plain fell apart, both figuratively and literally.

Ah-ha. I think the mystery is solved. Wink
