Naruto is not just a typical action anime. It also has drama in it. The manga version of Naruto was the first manga that made me cry because I could somewhat relate to Naruto. The other characters also have their own problems and they're dynamic.
I'm just saying that Naruto is not just another entertaining action-packed anime but it is also very thought-provoking (in my opinion).

Uhhhh, yes it is. And this is coming from someone who is a big Naruto fan. It is just as much a typical action/adventure series as DBZ, One Piece, and Yu Yu Hakusho are. I'm so sick of anime fans taking their most favourite series too seriously.Calling it that doesn't mean that it isn't good for what it is or you can't enjoy it. But's let's call a spade a spade shall we?

I think that's all a matter of how you look at this subject.
For one thing, I don't think VML is overvaluing Naruto so much as undervaluing other shonen action series. I think Dragonball and Yu Yu Hakusho are deeper than most people give them credit for, just like he says Naruto is. I think the first 6 episodes of YYH were especially dramatic, with so much talk about Yusuke's surprisingly altruistic death and his friends' attempts to prevent his body from being destroyed (I kind of feel like it's a shame that they sort of turned away from that and went straight for the tournament fighting once he met the old mystic). And Dragonball... I was just watching movie 13 last week (on nth generation fansubbed VHS, w00t!) and at one point I thought to myself, it seems like you don't see anime this gripping much anymore. (My favorite scene is where Vegeta throws himself in front of an office building to prevent the people inside from being cooked alive. Never would have seen that coming.) DBZ, in particular, basically tells the life story of two generations of true old-fashioned heroes. (The kind that aren't fashionable in Hollywood anymore.) If you've got the time to watch the many episodes it consists of, I think you can definitely get a lot more out of that series than just the momentary satisfaction of seeing the various power-ups and flashy super-moves.
So, I would suggest that maybe the real truth is somewhere between your given perspectives? It's all about how much time you can/want to devote to a series like this. I think it can be enjoyed to differing degrees.

Actually, DB is my favourite seires of all time and I also love Yu Yu Hakusho. I think you missed where I was coming from. My point was actually closer to yours, I suppose I just didn't word it right. I agree that it is more of a case of undervaluing other series that are similar. *sigh*But that seems to be the way with some fans. Their particular series is always the exception to the rule.

Well put. Naruto isn't the best thing since sliced bread but it's not terrible either, especially not in this early stage before it fell victim to insanly drawn-out storylines and lost sight of what made it really interesting-that is, Naruto being the host of the demon that nearly wiped out his village and thus being forever isolated from those around him. Taken as a whole, I'd put it above YYH (which is good to start with, but went downhill when they traded in the Yusuke As a Ghost idea for fairly generic shonen action) and DBZ, and below Bleach and One Piece. It doesn't have the consistant quality of those two series, even if you ignore the recent filler.
Viz is doing an awesome job with this release, though. The dub is great, and the uncut sets are an awesome idea that I hope pays off for them in a big way so other long series are done like that.

Will the "uncuts" contain the same dubs as the series being shown on CN? By that I mean if this exact release will be pretty much be useless once the "boxed set" comes out?

By saying typical action anime, I don't think the author meant that in a bad way. He used One Piece and DBZ as examples. While I haven't see much of DBZ, One Piece is also an action series where the characters are dynamic and developed wonderfully.

Zac said that it had drama and pathos, isn't that enough acknowledgement? I don't remember very much tear-jerking material in the first 4 episodes, but yeah, around 18-19, and in some of the 30s / 40s episodes, there's enough drama for me.
Why these dubbed discs? What audience? Chances are, parents whose kids want to see Naruto and say "Buy me that, Buy me that!" The parents and young children don't care about the Japanese track, and the parents don't want their kids seeing the unedited version...that's how things seem to me. I don't think that there could have been a "perfect" Naruto dub that would have satisfied all the diehard fans. From what I've watched on Cartoon Network, the dub is at least adequate if not good. I've heard worse, and some care was taken with names and pronunciations.
"Believe it!" is also a good touch--chances are, people who complain about the catchphrase either haven't seen the Japanese version, or don't really understand enough Japanese to recognize that Naruto does say the relatively meaningless phrase "~ttebayo" all the time. Fansubbers often leave in stuff like this, like the ~nyo's of Dejiko in Di Gi Charat or the extraneous ~desu's of Chisa in Comic Party Revolution, but I've never seen a Naruto fansub leave in ~ttebayo.
So, I hope that Naruto helps expand the fandom, and this dub should help. I'm liking the series well enough, and I'm speaking as one who prefers drama/romance anime and who doesn't usually like long shounen action series like DBZ, One Piece, or YYH.

I think it'd be really cool if they had a more literal dub along with the uncut animation, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

This seems like an easy holdover release for Viz. Get it if you seriously need Naruto on DVD, otherwise just wait for the uncuts.

I was reading through the release list and didn't see this anywhere. Any idea when this might come out? And, is it to be implied that the unedited box set will also contain the original Japanese tracks?

Due out on 7/4. No official solicitation yet but Viz folks have said it at several panels now.

Obviously. Why would they release an uncut version with only the dub track?

This kind of reminds me of what happened with The Wedding Crashers DVD. I work in a video store so I'm always interested in how many versions of a DVD are released. When the Wedding Crashers was released on DVD there were two versions. The Theatrical version and the "Uncorked" extended version. There were two versions of the DVD despite that the theatrical cut was on the "Uncorked" version as an option. Why? Because they want people to accidentally buy the original version and then see the "unrated" version and buy that too. I feel kind of sorry for all the people that already bought this version of Naruto thinking that it's the uncut version.(Lord knows many did) Now they'll have to fork up the extra cash to buy the uncut one when it comes out.
