I'm a amateur translator in korea. (Mostly Japanese-Korean subs).
It's very interesting to see How different Japanese-Korean subs and Japanese-English subs are. Cultural, linguistic differences are considered significantly in translation. And Korean and Japanese are not different as much as English and japanese do. So You might think my work(Japanese to Korean)is a easy job. But it's not true. Many amateur translators do sth called Direct translation(직역). In this way, i can translate 'directly' which means 'word to word' not changing structure at all. For example, 悩みも何もないように見えるハルヒの唯一の悩みとは Haruhi seems like the kind of person who shouldn't have any worries. All i have to do here is replace japanese words (悩み, 何 , 唯一) with right korean word. Many amateur translators in korea think "it's done, it's enough." But it's SHIT. People can manage to understand Anime with context. However, when i read aloud these translation. It sounds like SHIT! Good translation sounds natural in Target language(Korean) So translators in korea, too, have to change many things. i don't know exactly How 'french-english or spanish-english' is done. But I guess this problem exist in these translation, too. Enough talking. I want to know where Anime translators' blog or forums are. |

http://translationdojo.com/ It hasn't been updated in a while, but it has a lot of interesting information about japanese->english manga translation from a veteran professional (and friend of mine). Honestly yes, there are similar issues with poor translations that are unnatural and too close to the Japanese, however it's not AS bad in english because english's grammar is so different from Japanese that a simple word replacement is completely incomprehensible/impossible. So in other words, even to be understandable requires a bit more work when doing Japanese->english than Japanese->Korean, hence the "low bar" is a bit higher. But there are still plenty of issues with fan translations (and some professional ones). |

Well, I know this fellow has done a lot of translations for CrunchyRolland other US anime companies. He has a few posts around the Mania forums where he mentions intricacies of his translation job.

If your looking for professional translators, finding them is not too challenging if they have any information posted on news websites such as this. Or since your in the translation field, ask around, you might be able to find a translator that is willing to field any questions you have to ask.
As for the other type of translators, your on your own for that. |
