I love Full Metal Alchemist. It is, in my mind, one of the best anime series ever made (next to Bleach, of course Mr. Green).

However, I am wondering something about this series. I have heard that the anime, at some point, begins to follow a completely different story from the manga. This raises three questions.

1. At what point (which anime episode, specifically) does the anime break away from the manga? I do not wish for details, please, as it is too good a story to be spoiled.

2. Why did this happen?

3. Which story do most people prefer, the anime or the manga, and why?

If anyone can assist me here, I will much appreciate it.

1. Well, technically the first episode. But it gets really differenty after episode 25.

2. More than likely they ran out of manga to adapt.

To answer your questions (Numbers 1, 2) I believe at vol 5 of the manga is where the story defintely begin to split away from each other. This is also the same time Ed and Al spoiler[go to find there teacher which is like the 6 or 7 volume in the series. Also in vol 5 of the manga Ed, Al, and Winry meet the girl with automail arms and she challenges Ed to a contest things become very different there as this when Ed and Al help deliever a baby. Well it's actually Winry who does, and she stay in town to become an apprentice and work on making better automail.]

There different mediums providing different approaches to a story about Ed and the world of Alchemy. Myself I perfer the Anime, but that is only because I have not finished the manga yet. Hope this helps answer some of your questions.
Till next time,
