These two women are two fantastic composers who's music you often hear in anime like Mai-Hime, Escaflowne and Noir. Yoko Kanno has achieved legendary status as one of the greatest musical talents in the anime industry. Yuki Kajiura has a similar style and recently she has been proving herself to be on par or possibly someday better than even Kanno-sensei.
Right now I am absolutely mesmerized by Yuki Kajiura's harmonic blend of techno, classical, new age and digital sound effects. I will forever be a fan of hers and between the two women I have mentioned I actually prefer Yuki Kajiura's music over Yoko Kanno's. Do any of you agree or are there die-hard Kanno fans out there? Here's their info: Yoko Yuki |

I love both, however, I prefer Kanno-sama. She doesn't have one style-she can go from jazz like 'Tank' to cutsey Jpop like 'Platinum' to techno like 'Inner Universe'. Yuki Kajiura has less styles than Yoko Kanno, but her music is still gorgeous. However, Kanno wins for me. A lot of her songs are some of my favorites!

Geez, this again?
I'm not sure how anyone can say
I'll admit that I crack up laughing everytime I hear the trademark drums-and-choir in Mai-Otome, but Kajiura's music is most effective when she doesn't rely on her cliches, like the Petite Cosette soundtrack. In my mind, Kanno wins because she's a better melodist. You can hum a lot of great Kanno tunes, but I'm yet to get that vibe from Kajiura. |

in my opinion Yoko Kanno has far more range than Yuki Kajiura. she dabbles in many genres, while Yuki Kajiura always sticks to the same formula. that's not saying she isn't good, i mean it works for her.

I searched on several different occasions and for over an hour to find an existing Kanno vs Kajiura thread. Granted I'm sure people have made many past discussions on comparing the two in the forum but I couldn't find any one specific thread on it. Plus Kajiura has had more time to develop her music and I think she deserves to be treated as an equal to Kanno-sama. I'm not sure how much truth there is in that statement but to say their styles are similar is even less far-fetched. Yes, Yoko Kanno has more variety and range of styles, but it's the particular style Yuki has which has made her successful that I love so much: The elegant use of bells, the soprano vocals mixed with jazz and techno. She has a great formula and I'd be perfectly content if she sticks with it. |

sorry if i disopoint any one, but i think that Yoko Kanno is the abvious choice for every one so far Past. i personaly think that Yoko Kanno is the Emperis of this kingdom.
i don't have anything against Yuki, but Yoko is the better choice in my eyes. not to mention that she did the majority of the songs on Cowboy Bebop, which also happens to be #1 on my anime favorites list. don't think i chose her for that reason, because i didn't. i chose her because i honestly feel that her music is better than Yuki's. |

As I expected there are some devoted Yoko Kanno fans out there. But I still stand strong to my preference for Yuki-san. I still really love Yoko's music too. Heck I have been watching Wolf's Rain recently and am continued to be amazed with her versatility with English songs. Mr. Conte is a talented singer and I think Yoko knows how to tap his ability to the fullest extent. Not to mention, Maaya Sakomoto, one of my favoritest vocal talents in anime. That ending song just sends chills down my spine when I hear her amazing voice.

I prefer Yoko Kanno over Yuki Kajiura. While I adore Yuki Kajiura for the beauty of her music, to me Yoko Kanno is practically the epitome of versatility and talent. Whenever I hear a Yuki Kajiura song, regardless of what series it may be from, I can always pinpoint that it's "Ah, a Yuki Kajiura song!"
With Yoko Kanno, you never know what to expect. She can (and has) done just about every genre, in many different languages, and she's done them better than anyone I can think of. She makes me adore genres of music I don't usually enjoy, she frequently gives me shivers, and I've never, ever gotten bored of a single one of her soundtracks (and I listen to some of those CDs daily for years). The second Wolf's Rain soundtrack is, without a doubt, my favorite CD ever made. She's just...a musical genius. I have yet to find anyone who, when exposed to a wide range of her music, doesn't agree. But this is coming from someone who literally refers to Yoko Kanno as God, so it shouldn't come as a surprise. Yoko Kanno is my favorite music composer, period. If I ever become very rich, I think I'll pay Yoko Kanno to supply me with endless amounts of music. ; Like...a soundtrack for my life, or something. I have an immense amount of respect for both of them, however. |

My goodness, this again? Why are these two always compared? I don't get it. At any rate, anybody on this forum who is at all familiar with my past posts should already know where my loyalties lie.
Kanno's versatility is a given, so I won't dive into that. My love for Yoko Kanno comes from the power and beauty of her music, and how any one piece of hers can emotionally affect me in an entirely different way. I can listen to "Sora" from Escaflowne any time and become instantly relaxed. Similarly, I can listen to "Cloe" from Arjuna and become instantly introspective. Or listen to "Quiet Landing" from Turn A Gundam and feel awe and inspiration. Or hear "Rise" from Stand Alone Complex and feel excited. So on and so forth. If I gave an example for every emotion Kanno's music was able to bring out in me, this post would last for pages (literally). I also agree with what Carlos said about Yoko's ability to write distinctive melodies. If I don't have the theme to Tekkon Kinkurito stuck in my head, it's usually something like "Wo Qui Non Coin" from Cowboy Bebop that sticks with me for hours on end. |

im a huge kano fan and love just about everything she does. the music she composers is more than just music its almost perfect for that particular scene or just about anything. i love her in Macross + and bebop really great songs.
my favourite kano song would have to be elm the song in cowboy bebop where spoiler[ Jet is chasing his old girlfriend across a river or lake.] its so beautiful and a great solo piece. also again from bebop the Jupiter jazz song i think its called goodnight Julia is just fantastic its such a good instrumental song and when the backing singers come at the end, it just gets better. yea so anyway i myself am a huge kano fan. keep it up kano where ever u are cheers |

Between the two, I would have to say Yoko Kanno.
I think Yoko Kanno's work is really broad in scope and always surprises you. The opening theme of Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, for example, is a haunting Celtic-inspired melody, while Escaflowne is more fitting with it's Romanic themes. She is truly a composer that can take various styles and give them a variety that makes you do a double-take and have to say "that was Yoko Kanno"? Yuki Kajiura, on the other hand, is easily recognizable. Play the Noir soundtrack, then play the .hack//SIGN soundtrack right after. Kajiura usually has either a rock / synth theme or a Western symphonic theme, but not much else outside of that. I like Kajiura's music and she's really talented, but when it comes to who is better at composition of music and variety of thematic styles, Kanno takes the award hands-down. |

I vote for Kanno. If by default, as Kajiura makes me say, huh? Kanno's songs, ( Hope Tony K. doesn't hit me over the head) catch my ear so much that I search the credits to find out who wrote the song. Her songs are also the few that I don't fast forward through, but listen to at each episode. Make me wonder how to play these on my bass. My skills at that have atrophied greatly. I would like to go to a jazz club with a combo playing the Kanno portfolio.
Perhaps I have just not watched anime scored by Kajiura. I haven't seen everything. |

Like I said in the Ai Yori Aoshi thread, don't revive threads that are old and lifeless. Besides, there's a a new, permanent thread for this topic now. Please copy and paste your comments there. And just so you know, my general window on reviving old threads is one month. If it's beyond that gap, please don't try to bring those back. Thanks. |
