I have a question about the number of episodes in Fullmetal Alchemist. In the Encyclopedia section of ANN.com they say that there are 51 episodes but then they have 2 columns. One has 51 episodes and the other has 41. Does anyone know why? I was thinking that one was the Japanese episodes and the other American, but that just brings up another question about why there is more episodes in Japanese. But if anyone could help me that would be greatly appricated.

Episode 52 doesn't have a title so technically the last two episodes are the last episode... wait technically there are 52 episodes but the last two have only one title... well I remember reading that somewhere but I don't remember where.

I don't know the reason for this, but i'm pretty sure FMA only has 51 episodes. I don't think there is an episode 52 without a title.

Ill be honest I got the newest dvd with episodes i think 24 - 28 and after watching them i couldnt help it I want to see more and I downloaded some episodes but they say it ends at 40 so thats why im so curious.

Okay I did a quick search and it seems there are 51 episodes and episode 50 has a title but 51 doesn't. I won't say the title since it may be a spoiler but still the last episode has no title. Ummm...what?  There are 51 episodes total. The very last one has no title name.

The 40 one is probably the number of episodes to aire in the US already or something like that. The series is definitely around 50 episodes long, and there's no way to make it any shorter while remaining "complete".

The reason for the two lists is to give the title names of the episodes. The US titles are often a little different from the Japanese titles. The reason there are only 40 listed in the US list is because that is as far as the US run on Adult Swim has gotten. No one has reported the episode titles beyond that point because they haven't aired yet.
If you notice, each of the titles have a date written next to them. That should have clued you to the fact that the the two lists were for the Japanese and US runs, and that the US run isn't finished yet. |

The titles on the right side, I believe, are meant for "official" titles from English langauge distributors, not approximate translations or fansub titles--after all, with multiple groups working on the show, who's to say which title is "correct"? The Funimation/[AS] titles show some "smoothing," though are occasionally a bit wrong--why change "That which was lost" to "That which is lost"--after all, it's "ushinawareta mono," not" ushinawareru mono"
 And yes, the last episode has no title, not even in Japanese--it'll be interesting to see how the DVDs present it, or if they manufacture a title.
