Was anyone else disappointed with Generations or Street Fighter Alpha? Alpha was ok, but it could've been so much better. Generations was below average. I was bored out of my mind and I had to force myself to watch it. It didn't feel like I was watching a Street fighter film at all. spoiler[It was implied that Akuma/Gouki was Ryu's father, which I wasn't too impressed with because that idea has been done to death by 'Star Wars'.]

For a Street fighter movie, it sure didn't have a whole lot of fighting; There's about 3 or 4 short fights within a 45 min time frame. The animation style is cool, but it's something that shouldn't be used in a Street Fighter anime. It reminds me too much of Aeon Flux or Beavis and Butthead. Not even the Gouki vs. Ryu fight was good enough to save this film (a fight that should've been featured in "Alpha"). It was a good fight, but it didn't belong in this movie. Generations has that day-time soup opera feel, which isn't a good thing. Street Fighter isn't a soup opera. It's supposed to be an action film, but they spend way too much time reminiscing. Confused

I didn't like the way Akuma was portrayed either. I liked him better when he was an ominous and mysterious character, not this misunderstood soul who just wants to be the greatest fighter ever. That part is taken by Ryu. Well, at least there were no substitute Akumas like there was in "Alpha".

Disappointed is an understatement. Even though I'm not as big of a fan as I was (Guilty Gear stole that top spot) I still like Street Fighter, and even though I went into this with fairly low expectations I still felt let down. First of all, I think the franchise isn't nearly what it once was. The only thing that seems to be keeping Street Fighter in gamers' minds are versus titles and Third Strike. Why this production was even made in the first place is beyond me. To my knowledge it doesn't preface or hype up an upcoming game (a la the new KoF anime shorts, which are too short), nothing especially exciting happens much less anything that would shock the SF world, and I wouldn't even qualify it as being movie length.

I don't expect much out of video game to anime transitions and vice versa. All I want is to be pleased as a fan. Give me some good match ups, the specials, and unite them all under some semblance of a story. Generations didn't do any of this. The few Hadouken's that were thrown looked pretty pathetic (which is a real shame seeing as how that was the only special that I can recall that was used), there were hardly any characters, and even then there were about maybe 3 fights out of the whole thing.

I thought this short was a fan teaser more than a fan pleaser. Ken shows up, but he's barely in the damn thing and doesn't even fight. Akuma (Gouki) uses (just in case) spoiler[Shun Goku Satsu] but we don't get to see that animated at all. Also while I'm at it, while I can understand why the English version went with Gouki, the name has been with US fans for years and the name was also used in Alpha, so the name "change" is another thing I didn't agree with. Especially since this is supposedly a prequel to Alpha (although a lot of things don't add up in order for that to make sense, I point to Sakura and Ryu meeting Gouki).

I don't know what Capcom wanted to do with this. I think they wanted to make up for teasing fans with a Ryu vs. Akuma fight in Alpha but the battle in this was so lackluster that I easily could have done without. I know I jumped around with my thoughts but I'm just typing as things come to mind. So far the best Street Fighter anime has been the Street Fighter II anime movie. It did everything right and not only that, but it was just a good movie. Whatever Capcom wanted to accomplish, they failed.

I like Alpha a lot. The production values appeared to be of fairly high quality compared to other titles made around that time. The art was fitting of the Alpha universe designs, the music was subtley dramatic and suspenseful when it had to be, the animation was very smooth for the choreography, and the voice acting/sound effects were well produced.

Plotwise, I especially liked the little part where Ryu went to confront Gouki in the mountains. It did a very good job of building up tension, and it would've been especially cool to see them take it further. Unfortunatley, that was probably the highest point of the movie.

The rest of it had some pretty good action sequences and fairly sparse amounts of character development, but that is something that's already understood since I've played the games. All I really hated was that lame excuse of a villain. Not only were his methods and reasoning for fighter data collecting crappy, but his character design just looked completey overdone to the point of stupidity.

I like the aura that the movie gives off for the most part and really applaud the production, I just didn't like the plot enough to ward it anything higher than a Very Good rating, not to mention we hardly get to explore the characters' motives and dispositions as witnessed through the games.

This is why I love Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture so much. Not only does it have an entertaining story, but the cast takes advantage of their pre-estabilished personalities from the games and applies them to the circumstances of both the movie and from the previous OAVs. It felt like great chemistry, and if you put that together with the mix of action, drama, suspense, and that hint of romance, the movie is one of the best game to anime transitions I've been come to enjoy over the years.

I just wish King of Fighters would go a little further than those really short ONAs...

Anyway, given the reviews and comments I've seen for Generations, I think I'll refrain from getting it. Thanks for the heads up Wink.

I too was dissappointed and I am a huge Street Fighter fan. I couldn't wait for this "movie", or very short film, to be released and was pissed when I saw it. I didn't think the characters looked like their game designs. Akuma, changed to Gouki for no appearant reason, had a big ass head.

I wasn't fond with the animation either it looked rather slow paced. When Ryu threw a Hadouken at the old man and he caught it and threw it back, this isn't a spoiler because it is shown in the menu screen, it looked weird he caught it in slow motion and slowly threw it back... WTF!

As a huge Street Fighter fan I was let down but I'm glad this animation is still better than the movie, but not by much. Lucky for us Street Fighter fans we still have the UDON Comic Book.

I might add that my friend bought the movie and burned me a copy and I still felt ripped off.
