Mine was Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. It was a very emotional drama about people who graduate from high school but remain friends afterwards and the romances that spring between them.
Another one of my favorites was Peach Girl even though it is has some comedy elements. I liked it because she was so misunderstood by everyone but she never changed and remained true to herself.

The first two that come to my mind are Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and Air. I liked Kimi ga Nozomu Eien because it was a real life drama/romance. No magic or anything supernatural or unworldly. There were few characters so everyone got plenty of screen-time and the interactions between the characters was extremely realistic. I think it did a good job of mimicking normal human reactions to the situations that arose. It was very real and easy to identify with the story and the characters. It was also extremely sad and touching.
Air also comes to mind because it was really a great drama, but not as much of a romance as Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. It had it's supernatural qualities but it didn't flaunt them, so the show never really became gaudy. It kept it's realism while not being real, because things started to seem as if they were 'normal' after a while. Air also took my by suprise towards the last couple of episodes, and I always like suprises.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien pretty much blew me away. Sucked me in and didn't let go. It was nice that there was no magic/overwhelming tech either. Just normal people and setting.

Everyone keeps mentioning Air
I think I'm going to see that next, when I am done with Shuffle!
By the way, I haven't seen anything great about Shuffle (I'm on episode 14). It is not boring, it is nice, but that's all. According to other people's votes I thought it would have been much better.

I haven't seen many drama/romance animes but there is one I loved. Its called Midori no Hibi (midori days) its more like a romance comedy and has a little bit of drama. The only bad thing about it is that it only has about 13 episodes

IMO it gets better in the next few episodes.
With Shuffle! in mind Id like to see the games sequel Tick Tack made into an anime, I've played neither game, but thoroughly enjoyed Shuffle!
I also enjoyed Kanon, although it took me a while to get used to the art style, the story was good.

Give it until about episode 18 or so...it picks up after that point. Of course, with any of these game-based animes, the quality of the story/ending depends on how much you like one girl vs. another--some will be happy, some will be disappointed. In KgNE, for instance, Mitsuki fans will like the ending more than Haruka fans.
I like KgNE too (though I was in the second group that I mention in the spoiler)--it's melodramatic at times, but it's still a great story grounded in realism--no magic, harems, or "My parents split up and and got married to another couple who have a cute son" scenarios.
Speaking of those scenarios, I'll mention Marmalade Boy as a nice "old-school" shoujo anime. . .long running (76 eps), lots of love triangles, squares, and pentagons, tons of high school drama and angst. Kind of cheesy sometimes, but hey, isn't high school like that, when you look back on it? Plus, the "step-sibling quasi-incest" angle of the relationship is just too deliciously scandalous to pass up.
Speaking of incest without the "quasi" prefix, Koi Kaze is a very good short series about a brother and sister who become attracted to one anothed, and deals their actions, thoughts, and feelings. Koi Kaze is slow-paced, and quite serious--may be disturbing to some, but it's worth a look.
I love AIR as well, though it's really not a romance. . .the only remotely romantic parts come in the "Summer" flashback arc at episodes 7-9, iirc. It's more about friendship and family than normal romance. I liked AIR's story because it was different from anything I had seen in anime before; a convoluted, confusing plot that defies logic and organization. If you accept that some things will be unexplainable (unless you play the game), you can sit back and let your emotions ride, and believe me, ride they will.
However, if you do want an orderly plot, try out Aishiteru ze Baby--it's a very cute shoujo anime about a high school guy who happens to take care of his 5 y/o female cousin, but there's a lot of drama about child abuse/abandonement, plus Kippei (who starts out as a playboy) and his growth towards maturity and being a suteki na boyfriend. Make sure to read volumes 6 & 7 of the manga (somewhere, somehow, somewhen--1st volume to be released in April) to get the rest of the story. I have to say that Aishiteru ze Baby contains one of the cruelest acts I've ever seen in anime, in episode 4 or 5 when Kippei's stalker dumps Yuzuyu's crayons in the trash and tells her that nobody wants her (okay, maybe it's not that cruel in the grand scheme of things, but come on, Yuzuyu is five ), and yes, I've seen Texhnolyze and a reasonable sampling of dark/violent anime.

AIR is most definetly the best romance/drama period. highly reccomended.
Elfen Lied i found to be a good romantic/dramatic story (twords the last five episodes) however it was more focused on psychological action and horror so.....
SaiKano was also a great drama. very dramatic indeed. however romance well....it was miniml i felt.
im more for romantic comedies anyway. Mostly because of the series i have seen, those turn out to be the best.

I think everybody I know who has seen the anime was in the second group. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Haruka fans enjoy the ending more because Haruka (the girl with the blue hair) ends up staying with Takoyuki?
I wonder which girl is gonna be chosen in Shuffle, for some reason I think he's gonna choose Kaede. I would choose the girl with the red hair, she seems a lot livelier than the others.

No, u've mistaken, hakura is the other girl, Mitsuki is the girl with the blue hair.
personally, I found KgNE to be quite poor. I felt that there weren't enough character development and it stayed untrue sometimes to the characters. And although there weren't any special effects involved, the story is very unrealistic and rarely happens.
Fruits Basket is what i'd recommend to be a very good romance/drama series. Although not very realistic, it makes people happy, and thats what i feel drama series all should do

It's KGNE for me, too.
Most drama/romance series deal with high school students which is kinda tiring after you've seen 5-6 shows.
KGNE, however, is about life after high school.
I've heard only positive reviews of Honey & Clover too, which will probably one of the next shows I watch.

*Haruka* is the girl with short red hair and braids.
These are valid points, but saying that it "rarely happens" isn't really fair. I'll admit that the situation is far-fetched and/or a bit unrealistic, but if romance animes stuck to the kind of stories that actually are commonplace, they wouldn't be very good.

I have to say this. I also went and watched Honey and Clover because of all the great positive reviews. It in the top 50 in ANN and it climbed really fast as soon as it came out, but I can't really recommend it.
The comedy aspect is very mild, and spread thin throughout the whole series. Yes, the story is cute, the characters are cute and even interesting, but please do not say this is a romance story. Yes, it is full of platonic relations but not a single one of them is ever fullfilled and then when you think something is finally about to happen, the main character goes on a bike trip for no apparent reason, does absolutely nothing interesting during his trip, comes back, still does nothing, and then series ends!
If in spite of all I've said you still want to see this anime, don't buy it. It's 2 thumbs down for this one from me.
