Rio - Rainbow Gate!

Didn't see a thread about it and, since it just got released, I figured I would take this opportunity to provide a discussion thread for it. If there is already one and I missed it, please delete.

Episode One

So the series is based on characters from a popular gambling game. The story appears to be in a western culture setting like America. I had assumed that it took place in Las Vegas when I saw the previews, but after seen the first episode, I'm not so sure about that.

The series appears to have a high animation budget, it's a very pretty show with sexy character designs and smooth animation. The music isn't far from good either. Of course, as expected, there's plenty of pantie shots, risque clothing, and voluptuous women and even a stereotypical loli with an oversized bunny.

The first episode is a standard, introduce the characters to the viewer while providing some mystery and intrigue into the different characters presented. Immediately, there is an antagonist and, as expected, spoiler[the conflict is resolved at the end of the episode]. They do leave us wondering what the hell happened though.

Rio obviously displays some sort of magical ability to calm gamblers in a certain casino, allowing for a more pleasant gambling environment. She's even capable of providing immense luck and fortune. Her abilities are, a bit more however as the episode shows us during the climax. Albeit an odd sequence of symbolic imagery, it certainly is pretty and interesting.

It's interesting to see a female lead in a card fighting show for once. Smile That's definitely a nice change of pace. To be completely honest, I wasn't expecting a loli to appear as a central figure (I'm assuming she's sticking around) so that's actually a bit disappointing. It's definitely packed with fan service, ecchi, and the color fuchsia. There's so much fuchsia, in fact, that it was overwhelming. I've never seen so many "blush bubbles" in my life. Even Rio's clothes are covered in a fuchsia glow that doesn't really look right.

For me, the story is just kinda blah. The stereotypical parody elements are nice but the series is just a bit, well... not interesting. Even though it's overflowing with sexiness and pretty things, I just can't seem to like it. I'm not even sure if I want to watch the second episode because it just didn't draw me in the way I thought it would.

Guess I may have been expecting too much from an anime based on a gambling game.

Has anyone else checked this series out yet? What do you think?

This show is as dumb as a post, but I find Rio sexy, so I'm watching. If, at any point, the show's inanity overwhelms Rio's ample charms, I'll drop it. I did enjoy the various bizarre touches, like the fact that Mint's grandpa looks like a Southern Civil War calvary general in an Austin Powers ruffled blouse and Rio's trippy "game mode" sequence. We'll see. Don't bet the farm on me going the distance with this one, but it could happen.

5 minutes.

I think I'll follow these boobs.

Her voice is pretty cool, and her body is great. Her boobies move as she walks. Thank god gravity exists. And that's enough to make me want to watch it. I like softcore porn, and while Rio alone isn't softcore porn, with the help of my imagination it certainly is.
I'm not a pervert, though. I watch softcore porn because I like the plot and story... they bring... together... with boobs....

Indeed, shallow and pedantic.

Yeah, I just finished it and I'm now aware that every reviewer exaggerated, just like I thought they would. Bullies I tell ya.

Absolutly horrible first episode, their plan was useing cliches, fan service and what felt like over the top "gambleing is great". I know this is based on some pachinko games, but it really feels like they burned the very esence of lame gambleing advertising into an anime.

Well it feels about as much or even more rediculous as Saki, where a simple game of chance becomes a hugely animated skill based fantasy scene. And those who have seen Saki know how crazy it could get, there better be no getting better from eating tacos, we already saw a strange aura flashes. Also Why the hell would they send her out very often if she actually makes them all win, what kind of a business plan is that.

I sure as hell hope people don't get addicted to gambleing from watching this. I will likely drop this as it was pretty painfull to watch, but who knows.

I had to do a spit-take at that. Granted only one episode has aired, but do you know how much re-used animation was in that one episode alone? They didn't even bother showing Rio's tits from different angles. They just ran the exact same 3 second jiggle 5 or 6 times throughout the show. The roulette wheel and slot machine also had re-used animation.

The artwork for the show is vibrant (at least at the beginning where it looked like they blew all their budget), but the animation is mediocre or even below average.

That's something I was wondering. So far I didn't notice much advertising, well I did notice what could be, but assuming it were, it was some very, very dull advertising.
How come you can you advertise gambling, but not cigarettes, when both are equally addictive and bad for your health and wallet?

Granted, one angle was enough to satisfy me, although watching it from different angles would've been an extraordinary experience.

Calling it "awful" seems like plain biased exaggeration to me. This show is at worst 4/10 from what I've seen of the first episode. The comedy wasn't completely messed up; actually, the comedy by the end was quite well done. What if that guy had stuck around as the antagonist/comic relief who's always there? But no, they dispatched him immediately in a fashionable manner.

Maybe I should have phrased it in the way that it LOOKS good so that it APPEARS they spent a lot of money on it.

I wouldn't call it mediocre or below average at all. Personally, I think it looks better (other than all the fuchsia) than Maid-Sama which I thought looked extremely dull, dingy, and blah.

I haven't seen anything that would encourage gambling to be honest. If the person watching it had a pre-existing condition and saw something that he/she felt nostalgic and positively about that revamped those feelings then, yeah, that person may relapse. There's a difference in watching something silly related to gambling and walking into a casino.

Although, I could see there being a problem if someone was addicted to the game it's based on and started going through withdrawals because they see the characters and have a need for the game.

Nah. It'd be good to know that even stupid people can find a life goal.

That's pretty much how most romcom are. It's not bad because of the cozy feeling it gives. Maid-sama's designs were quite lovely.

... I think this is my new guilty pleasure show. I can't ignore my love of casinos (and any extravagant place for that matter), and I'm incredibly thankful that the fanservice isn't overwhelming.

I didn't like the first episode too much, but the poker game was alright.

I find it amusing that the service is actually more tame than if the characters were in, say, high school

Loved the first episode. It's pretty much Yu-Gi-Oh with lots of fanservice and with poker. Is it silly? Of course, but it's fun, and the art is amazing (and I don't just mean Rio, who's gorgeous) and I love the casino resort setting, which is quite rare. Plus ferrets are always cool. I think some people bashing it are taking it a bit too seriously; it's pretty much supposed to be pure fun and eye-candy and I think it hits both marks very well. Now we can now ask ourselves which sexy outfits and situations will Rio be put in next week? Twisted Evil Maybe she'll play roulette and other casino games in crazy, over-the-top fashion?

Episode 2 was far better than episode 1. A few more characters join the cast, and we start getting into the plot of the show (Gate Battles) This week's was Roulette in the form of beach Volleyball, with Rio in a lovely bikini to fit the occasion. Also we get an opening and an updated ending theme, both of which are really fun and cute.

That describes this show pretty much: fun. Don't take it seriously, tune in for the gorgeous visuals and music and sillyness. Yugi Mutou's got nothing on Rio when it comes to playing games. My favorite characters are the new klutzy girl and the green haired showgirl who's always so apathetic towards everything (calmly walking away from a giant wheel about to crush her)

I wasn't even having fun. Somewhere in the middle of the clumsiness, I realized I was skipping parts of it and then I figured "you know what. I don't care for this too much any more."

Even the storyboarder thought the episode made no sense
