I bought this right when it came out, because the art for the ad pages in the back of other TP titles looked nice. (I am an Aubrey Beardsley fan, much love to intricate inked line-art) It also seemed as though it had a different type of storyline than what it actually turned out to be when I read it.

Pure laziness stops me from giving it away though. ^^;;;

The link towards the end of the review doesn't work. The one that's supposed to be a link to the retraction statement thing.

And I'm sure somewhere, some goths are reading the latest attempt to get them to buy gothic anime and going, "Ahahahaha anime geeks, gotta love em." I mean, I know a couple of goth kids, they're not that bad, just as long as they're not being overly dramatic.

I don't think that Zac mentioned that the retraction was made because LeGrow Never said That. Or maybe i missed that part.

If she really said that then, wow Shocked Bizenghast is the book that you should judge by it's cover, in a backward sense.

As I said in another thread here I like the cover, shame about the rest of the book though. The meaning of that word "gothic" has been completely changed from its original meaning which was an architect’s term to describe a pointed arch. Wink

Well, I don't know if it's not on the book or not, but if you happen to have the summer 2005 issue of Manga-Takuhai from Tokyopop, there is a column where they state that she won't tolerate anyone cosplaying her characters poorly, and that they should do their research. (Not sure why I still have that Takuhai lying around, wasn't that good...)

Oddly enough, while looking for more info on this manga (for no good reason whatsoever, I just have too much time on my hands), I found this thread:

animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5936

In it, pretty much everyone says how much they like the artwork, particularly Zac. Zac, did something happen after this time that caused you to not like the art, or were you just being nice to the artist to begin with?

That text about LeGrow and cosplayers was written by someone at TOKYOPOP without LeGrow's consent or knowledge. She was horrified when she found out, and she demanded that TOKYOPOP retract the statement.

Too bad the link's broken, because the review doesn't adequately explain this.

When I read it, it sounded like a really subtle sarcastic barb at the artist. Knowing Zac, I'm gonna side with that option personally.

Actually, no, I was sincere. But that was having been only exposed to her more detailed work - the review points out that I do like the chapter break pages, which are more indicative of the art I saw earlier.

But the artwork of the manga itself? Atrocious. Rushed. Sloppy.

Tokyopop never said that LeGrow never once said anything of the sort - the comments made were "extrapolated from an interview" they did with her. So while no, she never worded it like that exactly, apparently at one point she did express those sentiments in some fashion. I'm not willing to say she "never once ever said that ever", because that isn't what the retraction states. I'm not here to defend Ms. LeGrow, only to state what has been said.

Anyway the link in the review is broken so I'll fix it.

Edit: I fixed the link in the review, you can read it for yourself there.

Well, I saw the phrase "'loosely based' on an interview" which really doesn't mean all that much to me. It only raises the question "how loosely?" Based on what the author had to say about the statement, it was evidently loose to the point of either misunderstanding or fabrication.

Of course, one or both parties could very well be putting a lot of spin on what actually took place (certainly both sides would have reason to), but that's not my place to say.

I'm not saying anyone has to defend the author, nor am I necessarily jumping to her defense. That's just how I saw the situation.
