I'm not one to directly watch or purchase an Anime who's main theme is romance. You'll find that elemental theme running through most popular Animes. But here are some of the few "romantic" series that I came across and/or had friends recommend, that I actually enjoyed.
Since you have seen Fushigi Yugi, you might like Yu Watase's Celestial Legend Ceres. A romantic tale set in modern Japan with plenty of intrique, angst, and a lot of violence. Another serious romantic story is the movie Millennum Actress, it tells of lost love through the decades between WWII until the present. My last suggestion for a more serious thought evoking love story is Voices From A Distant Star, the winner of the farthest space between unconsummated love, all kidding aside, this is a tear jerker. If your looking for a dramatic fantasy with elements of sci-fi, and mechas, Escalowne of the Heavens, lots of romance and war going on. If you like a lot of comedy with your romance, and a lot of sqabbles, misunderstandings, and a lot of fan service, Love Hina might suit you, not one of my personal favorites, but thats just me. Another comical romance anime is Chobits, which tells the story of country boy meets computer. My last recommendation is a personal favorite, His and Hers Circumstances, very funny and enduring tale of high school scholastic competitors awkwardly falling in love. IMO a wonderful story. Good luck with your search, hope this might help. |

The most "romantic" anime I know is Video Girl Ai. Is is far more touching than your typically teeny comedies with whining boys wanting to confess to their love over 18 million episodes whithout getting anywhere. In Video Girl, things really go forward, and the feelings involved are more developped and comprehensible than your shallow Love Hina-stuff. Besides it uses brilliantly some sci-fi elements to metaphorize some difficult to describe desires. It's short, but give it a shot, then try the manga, who goes even further. One of the greatest hymns to love of our times, seriously!

Well, for me, a good romantic anime has got to be Suzuka. Though the pace of the show is incredibly slow, the story pretty much makes up for that. Good story.
Samurai X is also a good romantic anime, in a weird kinda way. I just loved the relationship between kenshin and tomoe, and how he reacts to her... well, u'll have to see to find out. Btw, it's the Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal OAV, not the horrible TV series. |

Most anime have romance in them, mostly twisted love trangles.lol. I guess the ones that I like the best would have to be D N Angel, Hana Kimi, Fullmoon wo Sagashite, and if you like yaoi then Gravitation is a must see. I think that is all that I can think of that have not already been mentioned, but like I said most anime have romance in them.
