Have you ever got that feeling that you have too much anime to watch? I own a lot of anime and I would say about 40% of it I have not got around to actually watching it. Have any of you ever had that problem? If so, how do you decide which anime to watch as well as what games to play or manga to read? It sometimes gets to the point where I spend more time deciding what to watch than actually watching it! Any advice?

Ha, oh boy do I ever have that problem. I've discovered a few things though:

I can never force a mood for a particular show, at least in order to start it initially. I really just have to go with whatever catches my fancy in order to start it. Once it's been started, it's easier for me to continue with the next disc later even if my mood isn't totally perfect. But as for starting something new, pick up a list or the cases of your unwatched series and pop in the first disc of whatever catches your fancy first (don't even look past it to the other discs, that will create A vs B and you'll get to B eventually if all goes well). I might not have ended up being in the mood I thought I was in at all, but I only needed to be in the mood to start it, my mood might change during the show easily (which might put you in the mood for a different show!), just hope that whatever your mind's thinking will remain in that state at least long enough to get the first disc in and get past the OP. If whatever I typed just made sense to you.

Sometimes I will really get a craving to watch a particular show, maybe just an ep, maybe the whole thing. Or maybe just a movie. I give in to these urges because they will be there nagging if I try to start anything new at that time. It's rather annoying, but if I don't, I may inadvertently end up disliking the new show just because it wasn't the thing I had determined I was in the mood for. Perhaps a shorter thing, like a single ep of Mushi-shi or a movie will put you in the mood to try something new too because you don't want the anime to end, you've just enjoyed the movie already and it's done.

Now, as for scheduling time, I did this thing a while back when I got a bit swamped where I watched two discs of anime per night, one of Trigun (which was on 8 discs) and one of anything else. Some nights I was unable to watch anything, but those series still went by really fast. No one's asking you to marathon anime (sometimes it works that way, happened with Basilisk, didn't go in there expecting to finish the whole thing in only 2 days, but daym!), so try and go at it gradually if it'll take the pressure off.

Send 'em my way. I've pretty much forgone any and every other hobby I have to make time to watch anime. My problem is not having enough funds to keep the stockpile going. Anime smile

I find it useful to have a space - currently a whole shelf for movie, television shows and anime - dedicated to stuff that I haven't watched yet. It makes it a lot easier for me to decide what I'm going to watch, because I can see what I have to watch and decide what I'm interested in, and see how much stuff that I have to go until I've finished watching all my unwatched stuff.

As for deciding what to watch - it depends on what catches my eye. A movie might come up in conversation which I own but haven't watched, a director that I like for one show might have done another show that is in my to-watch pile, or I might feel like a particular genre or type of show and a particular DVD meets that criterion. But generally, there's a reason why I went to the effort to find a movie, so it's not to difficult to watch something once I put it in my DVD player.

Whenever I go to my local Fry's I swear I want to empty out their anime section, unfortunately I have not the funds for that. Laughing

I have to settle for picking up 2 or 3 anime's at a time. Anime smile

I have some reviewers who share taste with me, so they usually do the first selection. Once I get on one franchise I try to get everything- now Matsumoto and WMT. The last factor is my mood and time. During hard times I usually don't want to see tragedies on screen, no matter how beautiful they seem.

My Netflix queue has 23 titles in it.

My Crunchyroll favorites has 39 titles in it.

I've 23 unopened DVDs in my collection.

No, I don't have too much anime to watch. I just don't have enough time to watch it all.

It's funny this topic came up now because I was thinking the same thing the other day. Everywhere I turn I see daunting backlogs. I own 83 anime TV series, 14 OAVs and 15 movies I haven't watched; I'm trying and failing to keep up with 22 currently airing shows and just recently I went through an exercise of categorizing all my "want to see" titles in My Anime section which now includes hundreds of titles.

So yeah, unless somebody discovers the secret of immortality, I don't have a hope in hell of watching everything that I want to watch.

I have a list taped to my DVD cabinet of everything I haven't watched yet, and consult it when I want to pop in a DVD. Run time usually factors in to what I choose, since I hate leaving a DVD half finished but don't often have the desire/time to plop down for a 3 hour 7 episode disc. (I should really try getting over that, so I can watch this stuff faster.)

I also have a seperate list to keep track of shows I'm currently collecting. It cuts back on the impulse buying- less coming in means less to watch overall.

With one or two notable exceptions, I normally avoid streaming. I don't have the time to stream and keep up on the DVDs (not to mention the games!), and it makes it a lot harder to come back to favorite series I pick up on DVD later.

The thing is, anime goes out OOP. Sure, I COULD hold off on buying anything until I'm caught up with my backlog, but then I take the risk of missing out on good series altogether. Besides, knowing I have a wealth of options to choose from when I want to start a new show is good, right? My backlog probably consists of 100+ DVDs, but I don't mind.

I almost always am caught up with the movies I own, and don't have too big a backlog of TV shows (have the full BattleStar Galactica and Sopranos DVDs and am halfway through each, and have the first 2 seasons of Burn Notice and am halfway through S1. Got the first two seasons of Mad Men, haven't started yet). Since these generally don't go OOP, I'm in not as huge a hurry to get everything I can right off the bat.

Umm, no. Chances are at least 50% of them are not really essential worth of your time (though you're free to do so if you choose!). When people overload on anime, this is how we get burned out on the hobby. The complaints about fanservice, tsundere and all that jaded anime fan stuff becomes to come out after watching too much anime at once.

I would say that in a single year, only about 5 DVD/BD R1 releases are really worth your time, 10-20 you could enjoy but ultimately take it or leave it, and the rest you really don't need to see at all.

I find I'm always watching at least 20 series at a time.

First, there's the obvious staples of Naruto, One Piece, Detective Conan, Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes, Fairy Tail, PreCure

Then you have all the season-by-season shows to watch

Denpa Onna, Moshidora, Ano Hana, Deadman Wonderland, Sekai-ichi, Dog Days, Gosick, C - Money and Control, SKET Dance, Steins;Gate, MariaHolicAlive, Seikon no Qwaser 2, Nichijou

Throw in the current Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series (Gokaiger and OOO)

And man, that's at least 20+ shows per season at least from me. That's why I always laugh when people say anime is dying Rolling Eyes If anything, yes, there's way too much anime out there to watch it's hard to find the time and still have time to play video games and do some other stuff.

You call that a backlog Smile ? This is a backlog:

136 TV series (plus 2 on order) unwatched, not counting at least 7 series (plus 1 on order) I watched entirely on fansub and then bought the DVD.

69 movies unwatched, not counting 3 rented or seen on VHS that I bought on DVD and haven't watched.

79 OVAs unwatched, not counting 4 rented or seen at club meetings that I bought on DVD and haven't watched.

I make very little attempt to keep up with new anime; mostly I just check out the first 1-3 episodes, usually the night before a club meeting so I can decide what to bring for "Viewers Choice". And then there are the terabytes of old unlicensed stuff I have (like Legend of Galactic Heroes and Rose of Versailles just to name 2) that I delude myself into thinking I will get around to watching one day.

Of course, sometimes life intrudes on one's time. I messed up my knee in a fall in early May; I'm back to work now but I have doctor visits and physical therapy (as well as the overtime I work to keep buying the stuff) cutting into my time.

It's simple; I can't die until I catch up. Laughing

You guys are making me feel better about myself. I thought I had a problem and maybe I do but I am nowhere near the level of anyone above.

I predict that the industry is going to come up with a media playback solution that will allow you to absorb a 54-episode anime in less than one hour. You will be equipped with a fiber optic jack at the base of your skull. Unfortunately this system will not be effective for education or work-related activities, only anime.

So don't despair technology will save the day.

My anime backlog isn't that big right now, just 3 things. I usually don't let it get too large as a rule, and if it does I run on the bare minimum of sleep to catch up.

Now manga on the other hand, current backlogged items there: 58. Anime cry
