Hi, I am a PhD student and would like to ask about the process in getting copyright permission for screen captures of Inuyasha Movie 3: Swords of an Honourable Ruler for publishing in a journal.
Would I have to email directly to Toho or Viz Media to ask for their permission to publish the screen images from the anime? Does anyone know how to contact the copyright owners for obtaining copyright permissions for the screen captures from Inuyasha movie 3. |

You might try this page first and see what they say. (Note the recommended time for getting a response, though.) My guess is that just using a couple of illustrative screen shots for what sounds like an academic work would probably fall under Fair Use principles, but I am definitely not an authority on this.

My experience in academic publishing is that the journal is going to be the one placing demands, determining whether it's fair use or not, etc. They may ask you to secure permission for the photos.

It's also important that you keep a record of whatever they tell you. If possible print it off, mail it to yourself and do NOT open the letter when it arrives.

The production committee of the anime film in question consists of several companies, and I'm not sure which is the 'manager' company, but Shōgakukan comes first in the credit line. As to such cases, the Shōgakukan site says, 'Please contact the legal affairs department.' The e-mail address of Shōgakukan is: [email protected] The mail form of Tōhō, which is the distribution company and a member of the committee is: https://www.toho.co.jp/mail/form.php |
