This information field is supposed to be synonymous with "place of birth", right? The reason I ask is because with some people I find information that distinguishes where they were born and where they were raised (one I've come across this with recently is Alexandra HAEFELIN), and I've assumed that we were supposed to give the birthplace priority in that situation. I have come across a few entries that do not follow my reasoning though, (for instance, Rebecca FORSTADT should have "Denver, Colorado, USA" as her hometown if we're going by place of birth) so I was wanting some confirmation on the matter.

I guess "hometown" would mean where they are raised. I'd feel awfully weird describing a town I have no memory of as my hometown.
But really, this type of information (along with blood type, favorites, hobbies...) was just put there because of Japanese idols. It's common to have very detailled personal information for idols, and they often have roles as seiyuu. |

Hmm, much information has to be rewritten, then. Quite a few seiyuu has detailed his/her place of birth and "hometown" differently. |

Hmm... well the definition of "hometown" seems to be rather ambiguous in my opinion. Looking up the American Heritage definition (courtesy of dictionary.com), it says "The town or city of one's birth, rearing, or main residence." For some people (myself being one), all three parts of the definition could be three entirely different places.
Is the Japanese term I see on seiyuu database sites 出身地 supposed to be equally ambiguous? With many English-language actors I've usually just entered place of birth, as that is the kind of information most readily available for the most part (particularly with IMDb, which specifies place of birth as a specific field of info) |

I've seen these following versions: 出身地: Hometown; can be either "place of birth" or "place where s/he was raised." 出生地: Place of birth. Period. XX生, YY育: Born in XX, raised in YY. |

Ahh... this seems to be the distinction I'm faced with as far as Alexandra Haeflin's bio goes, with it mentioning her born in London, but raised in Munich. Given that she voices German-speaking parts in Nanoha A's, the latter is probably more important as far as anime is concerned. Looks like I'll just use the chronology field to my advantage in order to distinguish. :) |

Right now, if applicable, I use both birthplace and current residence as Hometown.
Example: Mari Iijima Hometown: Tsuchira, Ibaraki, Japan (Birthplace); Los Angeles, CA I would, however, like to see separate entries on the Encyclopedia, as there's not enough room for one line to place both birthplace and residence. |
