I'm probably never going to find an official complete dvd set of this series for a decent price and piecing it together seems like it will be equally as expensive and difficult. I've purchased a few unofficial/Chinese bootlegs before and, while they haven't been great quality, they've by no means been unwatchable (I actually got quite decent bootleg copies of Death Note and Paranoia Agent, among others). The Malaysian ones I'm seeing on ebay at least have some semblance of 'official' packaging and for $25, anything with clear audio and picture would be worth it at that price.
Anyone every purchased one of these pseudo-official Malaysian import dvd sets of a series and can attest to their quality either way? |

Why support bootlegs when you can import something official.

I would never by Malaysian sets - I remember when I first started collecting and I managed to grab the original Dragonball series from Malaysia and the play back was awful and the subtitles were barely readable and there were so many typos and general mistakes. I had a similar issue with Junjo Romantica.
I would never buy from Malaysia again - one as they are pretty much bootleg and two the quality is appalling. |

Get the sets from Siren Visual instead. Those are legit sets and Siren is an awesome company who has licensed many awesome things.

The problem with the Siren Visual ones would be that Sohma_Curse is in NY, and presumably has a R1 DVD player, and those are R4 DVDs, which won't play.
If you're not able to get a legitimate release, I'd say go for fansubs. Sure, they're just as illegal as the bootlegs, but at least you won't be giving money to the bootleggers. |

It's not difficult to get around the region restriction. One can purchase a region-free player, or play it on a computer with player software that can play the disc without changing the 5-time region switch limitation. Anyway, I second what Dessa said: better download a fansub from a fellow fan rather than paying bootlegger. Not to mention the video and translation quality of fansubs are often better than those of bootlegs. |

I live in Australia. These days about 90% of my anime is imported from the USA and played on my cheap region free bluray player. |

Seconded. And just download BlazeDVD for your computer to play them. It's free, assuming you don't just have a net book without a disc drive or something. That's what I did to get Higurashi no Naku Koroni Kai. |

What program can get around the Region switch limit? I was thinking of buying the European release of Paranoia Agent myself (any idea if it has the Geneon dub?)

VLC can bypass it. Just put the disc in the drive, go to the file menu, and select "open disc" That should work. |

Hmm...For $80 + shipping + the hassle, I personally would just spend the $150 or so to have the official region 1 release and not worry about getting around the technical roadblocks. I'm normally a stickler for official releases, and I've spent some insane money on rarities before, but I've been looking for this one for a while and just cannot find one at a reasonable price.
For the record, though, I'm someone who only watches dubs, so the sub text's quality means nothing to me. As long as they use the official dub track, I'd be alright with super compressed video in the interest of saving around $125+. |

You would spend $150 or so? How about $164 used? Or I believe you could buy it for download off Amazon for $41.99. This way you get the quality and the dub. |

There is no official region 1 release of Higurashi Kai. Oh, but if you only watch dubs then there's no real point to this at all. Why would you want to only own the Question arcs when you will never watch the Answer arcs because it will never be dubbed? |

I'm aware of the lack of a dub for the sequel, however I will certainly check out Higurashi Kai if When They Cry piques my interest enough to do so. I'm not totally averse to subs to the point where I will NEVER watch them (as I have watched some subbed series/movies before), I just much prefer dubs. |
