I searched all over and couldn't find a "main" DTB thread.
I'm halfway into season 1 on Netflix and the show is okay, but I keep waiting for the story to "start from the top". DTB starts in medias res and seems to be staying there. Now I hear that it stays there through the entirety of seasons 1 and 2. I'm not asking for all the mysteries behind the gate and such to be laid bare, I just need a part where the story starts from the beginning and gives the setting an actual backbone. If there isn't one, then I really don't know if I'll continue the show. |

Here's the thread for the original series, and here's the one for the sequel and the side stories for said sequel.
But I figure as long as I'm posting here, I might as well give you my view. It's been a while since I've seen the series, but I remember that Darker than Black never did fully explain a lot of things. You do ultimately find out some important details, such as a lot of stuff dealing with Hei's past, what Amber is planning, etc, but there's not really any point that I can recall where the story "starts from the top" so to speak. The details that are revealed are revealed slowly as the series unfolds, if I recall correctly. Though as I said, it's been a while since I've seen it. I still enjoyed the first season, because I rather liked the characters. Then there's the second season... which completely ignores most of the unanswered questions from the first season to tell a new story that seems almost more like a side story and is a thousand times more confusing than the first season, leaving more things unexplained, and the explanations you do get just don't make sense. And why at least the first season answered most of the questions related to the personal lives of the main cast (it was questions related to the settings as a whole that were left unexplained, mostly), the second season neglects to answer hugely important questions regarding things that completely and utterly changed the characters from the first season. And speaking of said characters, the characters I loved so much? *breaks into fit of maniacal laughter, then sobs.* I heard the gaiden episodes released on the Darker than Black: Ryusei no Gemini dvds reveal more details, but I have yet to see all of them, and am honestly still pissed off at some of what happens in the second season, and dreading what sort of explanation will be given. But this is just my opinion, of course. |

The side story occurs between the first and second seasons. It tells the viewer some of what happened between the two seasons, focusing on a set of particular characters. It does nothing to explain the weird things that occur in the second season. I suspect that no explanation will be forthcoming.

If you keep watching the show, they'll explain everything. The backstory of all the characters is explained. You'll learn how Mao became a cat. You'll find out the mystery behind Rin. You'll see Hwang's back story. But wait, there's more--you'll also see Hei become a contractor & how he gets involved in the syndicate. The show is designed for you to figure everything out as you go along, knowing anything going in cheapens it for you. The show has a sense of mystery to it, it gives you the opportunity to try and figure out the whole story, while developing the characters & furthering the plot. Once enough development has happened for the revelation to have a real impact on you, the show reveals all of these things. The revelations are blatant as well, unlike something like Tehnolyze or Ergo Proxy, it doesn't just show you all the pieces at the end and leave you guessing, it explicitly states most things. Don't worry, the show isn't simply 2-episode story arcs about assassinations for the whole show, in case you haven't gotten out of them yet. It's hard not to drop spoilers. Oh, if you aren't watching it in English, you should. The sub is alright, but empirically I've found that people I know who went with the sub finished the series with a lackluster view of it and were puzzled over the show, whereas those who watched the dub walked away having found an awesome show with most everything tied up at the end. Doesn't prove anything, and I'm not trying to say that it does. Just throwing it out there. Also, the dub is quite excellent to boot. (And all the DVD extras will mean more to you if you watch the show in English.) |

Nor is it really needed to enjoy these great series. Wouldn't hurt if it did though. |
