how long does a license last let say funimation license a anime how long will it last for 5 year? or depends on them?

Depends on the contract. 2-5 years with options to renew are typical. Some licenses are perpetual, although that is mostly with older titles and extremely rare today except in cases of co-ownership (ie: when the "licensee" is a part of the production committee and actually co-owns the rights as opposed to licenses them).

Actually... the typical deal term for videogram licenses is 7-10 years. Most major DVD distributors won't even touch something that will be available for less than that.

Justin's right. I had mixed up the term, and the conditional term.

Conditional term is where, if you don't act on the license (ie: release the anime on DVD) within a certain period, you lose the license. -t |

I knew the typical duration of the whole term, but was unaware of the conditional term.
