I'm a huge fan of the Berserk series. I like the way that it has a much more mature feeling to it compared to most anime I actually see today.
I've really been looking, trying to find some more anime that is at all similar to this genre.. It doesn't have to have all the same aspects as Berserk. It doesn't have to be fantasy or anything of the like. It just has to be UP there with berserk. On the same maturity level. Something that feels like it has no limits, like Berserk. Here's a list of Anime I've found that satisfied my taste Gungrave Hellsing Elfen leid Ninja Scroll Some of the Kenshin series.. most particularly the OVA's Vampire hunter D: bloodlust Jin roh: the wolfsbirgade Samurai Champloo Can anyone help me add to this list? |

Those series are not mature. They are series just with over exagerated violence, and nudity. This show is probably more mature than your whole list of "mature" anime. anime#436

3000 Leagues in Search of Mother's rating: All Ages. And by 'mature' I think he means shows that were created for an older audiance. I'm sure you know this too, I just thought I should point it out. And, while you may think shows like Gungrave, Samurai Champloo, and Hellsing are all about exaggerated violence, that's probably because you've never seen them. That or you've been watching too much crap like 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother. Anyway, I'd add Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent, Wolf's Rain ('though I hated it).

i would say that you should add akira to the list, also add basilisk and blue gender. The shows that i dont really think that should belong in the mature series list you ave is hellsing and samurai champlooo. In my opinion those 2 are just shows for the action and comedy lovers, still those are good shows to watch but it just does not fit in the "mature" anime. gungrave and blue gender is a must watch i would say, those 2 animes are probably the closest to berserk since you liked berserk so much. Both shows has a physcological theme in it, and my guess is that you like that type of genre. If you are looking for the romance i suggested bluegender. If you are looking for the betrayal i strongly suggest gungrave. To me mature is more with story and drama, then action and violence. |

I agree with you that the Kenshin OVAs are a step above the TV series. Not exactly, but closer to the level of Jin-Roh than the TV series for sure. If you are looking for something on this level, I would enthusiastically suggest Monster. Although the Anime hasn't been licensed yet, the Manga will begin releasing soon here in North America from VIZ. This is a serious crime/mystery drama, and frankly one of the best shows I've ever seen. And I'm still way back on episode 30 something. Up to now it's been nothing short of a masterpiece. The fansubbers are allready up past episode 60. Monster follows the exploits of the wanted vigilante Dr Tenma, as he tries to correct his past mistakes. A very cool and mature show.
Another Japan only release I would recomend is Macross Zero. This isn't your kiddy robotech of memory - no. It's a new prequel to one of the most famous mecha shows in history. This 5 episode OVA sports some of the best music and visuals I've ever experienced, and a gripping story line that will keep you glued to your seat until the end. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is another one not on your list. The first season is available on R1 DVDs. This show, IMO, is not on the level of Monster, but is still very good. Another crime/mystery show, but this one focuses on Section 9 - the elite public security force. Watching them fight against cyber terrorists is exciting, will hook you right away. I'm not a fan of the cheesy tachikoma tanks, but past that, this is a very cool show. Gantz was mentioned earlier, and it's first season is available in an official R1 release from ADV. This isn't a bad show by any means... ok, the dub is pretty annoying. But I would not consider this show on the level of Jin-Roh or my previous suggestions. As YUGI said, most of the shows on your list are just extremely violent. Gantz is just the same. Although you've allready seen it, I would recomend Elven Lied before Gantz. I've only seen the first half of Gantz, but from what I hear, it goes down hill from here. |

I haven't seen Berserk, but Texhnolyze is up there in terms of seriousness, violence, and all that other jazz.

Well if you're looking for something like Hellsing than I would recommend Trinity Blood. Its pretty much the vampire killing vampire thingy but theres a difference in this series. Instead of the vampire working for protestants he works for the catholics. Anyways I found it to be bloodier than Hellsing.

I found Trinty Blood to be less on the blood side and more on the bore side, but that's just what I got from watching the first 10 episodes of it. But if you liked Berserk, then I recommend Bastard!! which is a 6 episode OVA and it's available on R1 DVD. I definitelty second Monster which is an incredible series although it's violent it's nowhere near Berserk but has an incredible story and will screw with your mind and shock the hell out of you. |

Fist of the North Star is definately a mature title. It's not exactly the greatest anime in terms of story, but the action is out of this world.

POKEMON, YU-GI-OH, DUEL MASTERS, ONE PIECE, RAVE MASTER are some of the most "mature" anime I've seen. Its violent .... to your eyes and ears!
I understood that by mature you meant violent. I think Champloo is violent, the guy gets his arm chopped off in the first episode, and Hellsing is meh. I can't believe only one person has recommended Texhnolyze but I second that. X TV and The X movie are pretty violent. I recommend the movie if you dont like character development. Check out stuff from US Manga Corps they probably have what yor looking for. MD GEIST, Demon City Shinjuku, Cyber City, are just a few. Not much story or eye candy but if "mature" you want, this will fill your fix. Oh and Ninja Ressurrection. Try to get a hold of Battle Royale. Its banned in the US and even though its not an anime, its very mature. |

The movie Spriggan is a good choice too. It has a very mature feeling and not just because of all the fighting but because of the situation within the story. To me it has same feel as Akira movie that was already mentioned in this post.

"Street Fighter" would be another "mature" title to add there. But I think "Haibane Renmi" is mature, so there you have it.

Serial Experiments Lain is a 13 episode series that definitely requires a more mature mind to understand. Or there is the movie Perfect Blue, it has your violence, and your nude scenes, but it is a psychological study of two people and will keep you guessing as to what is going on.

Hmm, mature anime recommendations....
I'll second (third?) Monster--it's hands-down one of the best series I've seen, although as has already been mentioned it has not yet been licensed. If you have no qualms with fansubs, go ahead and begin watching it, as there's a very good chance you'll get hooked on the show after the first or second episode. I also second Serial Experiments Lain; I liked that series so much that I made my second AMV based on its story In addition to Monster and Lain, I also recommend Last Exile, which continues to be one of my favorite series of all time. Now I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for in terms of "maturity," but it DOES have a very compelling story, excellent art, animation, and music, AND great characters too. And it's not particularly "kiddy" in any way--in fact, it gets downright dark and scary sometimes--so I guess that it's "mature" by virtue of the fact that it's not the opposite And lastly, I'll go ahead and recommend Koi Kaze if you're looking for a unique love story with some of the best storytelling and character development I've seen in a romance series. Of course, I should forewarn you that the anime revolves around an incestuous relationship (quite a mature theme), and thus you should avoid it if you have serious qualms with that idea. Hope that helps...enjoy! |
