If you've heard the news, PJ and his LOTR script-writer will be producing the HALO movie, which pretty much means Eva's been pushed back to '07-'08 at best. Thoughts?

Was there ever any proof that WETA would be involved in a live-action Eva movie anyway? The link was tenuos.

My thoughts are why you post things like this. We all know the Eva film is dead in the water.

Well they did pre-visualizuation stuff so yeah. Technically they were. Because of that, they most likely would have made the final effects too if it had ever gotten off the ground. That's not always the case though.

Um, WETA representatives were on one of the Evangelion DVDs talking about how psyched they were for the project and how they'd already done a mountain of concept art, so I guess they kinda would be involved.

Not exactly what I would call "giving up," more like "doing work." In any case, even if Eva LA got a director and funding today, it's not like WETA would be in a position to do anything for quite some time anyway. Who needs WETA anyway? ADV could save themselves the money, and just use the Soul of Chogokin models.

I hadn't heard of the Live-Action Eva since about two years ago. I thought it was cancelled cause I hadn't heard anything about it until now. I think they gave up on it a long time ago I mean didn't they give up on DBZ. I think DBZ was announced before Eva wasnt it?

The last official word on it was earlier this year.. and that word was that it's still alive and they are in talks with directors. No news since then though.

Well, I emailed WETA about the project, and they said that the actual production of it will be handled by ADV and Ganiax and they will just be in charge of the SFX and art direction, similar to their deal with Disney in relation to Narnia. Also the fact that ADV seems to be slowing down in the anime biz while they've made more of a push with mainstream recognition (EVA on CN) and theatrical releases (Place Promised and their numerous live-action titles) means they're placing most of their bets for success on the EVA movie (if Place Promised is nominated for the Oscar, it only be yet another ego boost for ADV's theatrical division). Although I doubt Jackson will direct, I've heard rumors that James Cameron will be directing and I personally think Alfonso Cuaron would be a great choice.

But yeah... Good point.

I can type standing, but only with one finger. Anyway seeing as ADV are doing some restructuring I would guess it's all down to a rather non- existant budget to proceed with. Meanwhile WETA has overheads to pay for too and so are moving on with business.

I still think that George Lucas and his crew should do the visuals for a live-action Neon Genesis Evangelion. My point would be the amazing visuals of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. If thats not enough then the visuals for the Original films of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and Star Wars Episode VI: The Return Of The Jedi (Though the original title is Revenge Of The Jedi!) are still just as good as the visuals of films today. Booyah! All shall praise Lucas as Lord Of The Visuals! Plus if Lucas is mentioned as part of production I believe the millions of fans of Star Wars would come racing to see his latest work, don't you think? Not only the millions of Star Wars fans but the legion of Neon Genesis Evangelion fans, doesn't anyone else think so too?

Actually thats a very good point. George Lucas would be able to give EVA the popularity it deserves. However I would kinda like it if EVA created its own popularity just from being good.

Not really. Not only are a significant faction of Star Wars fans still pretty sore from Lucas' prequels, but the mere use of his special effects house doesn't automatically mean he gets the nod for anything having to do with the movie. ILM did the special effects in Jurassic Park, for example, but you don't see Lucas credited for jack in that movie because he didn't do jack.
And personally, if we're going to compare the special effects in the Star Wars prequels (ILM) and The Lord of the Rings (WETA), I'd say Lord of the Rings wins, hands-down. While the Star Wars prequels aren't very representative of ILM's usual work, and Episode III was actually handled better effects-wise than the others, the bulk of those movies featured some pretty rank effects work for a film of that scale, really. The backdrops looked like way-too-obvious blue screen a lot of the time, and many of the CG character models just looked plastic...too shiny & smooth, and in some cases their movement was way too stiff. Again, I know ILM can do better, but in strictly comparing these two trilogies, I still found Lord of the Rings to be much more impressive, lacking many of the problems ILM's Star Wars I-III effects had, and just generally looking more natural and believable as a whole. The character models and backdrops actually blended more into the scene, rather than appearing super-imposed onto a blue screen.
