I'm thinking of starting up an anime club at my school and I was wondering what kind of stuff an anime club should do other than watch anime. Any suggestions would be nice. I'm hoping that I can include something more than just watching anime cause that would be a really boring club. Anyways thanks in advance for all replies!

Reading manga I'd guess. Have food and drinks. If you like cosplaying try that. Thats it for my ideas for now.

A name eh? Various brainstorming ideas are:
Ichigo's anime club
Banryuu(I think it means Order Dragon or something of the affect)
Japanese Media/Arts Appreciation Club

(Edit: I added what banryuu means and club to the last line.)

Do what my club does. Discuss the anime. Talk about the industry. Give speeches on anime and anime-related things. Plan trips to nearby conventions. Do fund raisers. Have officer meetings. Anything to make the club more than just watching a series, then leaving without talking to anyone.

During break times or before/after official club times, watch AMVs or other things of interest from teh iNtarn3t. We used to play video games during our pre-club "social hour," but we were shut down on that by the authorities. Other than doing planning for our convention, we don't have that many official non-anime activities--mainly, there's just a lot of space in our building where people wander around to chat, play CCGs, watch other anime on laptops, have mock fights, etc.

Let's see....

Our official meeting from from 6-10 where we watch a variety of anime. We have an 'Officer's Choice' series and a 'Member's Choice' series which members voted on at the begining of the semester. In between that we show two episodes of shows that get suggested and then voted on each week on our website forums.

From 5pm to 6pm each meeting, we have an hour where we show various things. One night might be AMVs, another night might be a concert video from a J-Pop/Rock band, have karaoke once a month, and various other odds and ends that feature various sides of the anime world and Japanese culture in general.

We have a cosplay contest once every semester and everyone really has fun with that. We have also had other contests. A few semesters ago one of our series was FMA...and we did a contest revolving around that. We also had a 'subtitling' contest where we took a short RAW clip of an anime and had members white in what the characters were saying. It wasn't a literal translation...it was similar to what Mr. Answerman does each week at the end of his posts. We also have a huge game of Capture the Flag coming up which has always been a great success.

Always keep a look out for things related to anime or Japanese culture in your area. Sometimes museums will have things or there might be a Japanese Festival somewhere near you.

Always remember, when you are just starting a club...you might not have that many members. But never get discouraged! Clubs take time to grow. I can remember when I first joined our club and we had about 20 people who showed up each week. A year later we had 75. This year we have somewhere between 100 and 150. No worries, as long as you stick with it and work at it, the possibilities are endless!

Good luck!

Or call it the Society For The Study of Modern Visual Culture.

Well, attending an anime club... Though not a school or college one... My experiences are these;

1. you put anime on, but not everyone will want to watch, so be prepared for people to socialise, read manga, play handheld consoles, and the like.

2. quizzes and introduction sessions can be fun. If you find some Japanese snacks, then you can dole thos out too.

3. once people become more comfortable with each other, you won't have to work so hard... Insofar as you don't have to worry about keeping people happy, what shows, etc.

I think what you could do is pull together a shortlist of anime to watch at the next meeting, and get the whole group to select from it the ones they want to see.

Most of all... Just make it comfortable, open, and friendly.

From my (current) experience as a Anime Club president... I'll give you a few things that have worked so far...

- If it's a school anime club, you'd likely probably best name the club under property of the school (e.g. "Blahblahbah High School Anime Club"). It'll help the club in being taken a little bit more seriously.
- Yeah. Don't make the club just a 2 hour long "shut up and watch the series" session. But on the other hand, don't make it a chattermouth social session where you completely ignore what's on the TV. What I've found in recent meetings, is that if you have a blackboard/whiteboard (assuming you're in a class room), use it. Use it to make silent comments and witty remarks and such, and it's easier to ignore (if you want to watch) than a bunch of people yelling out random remarks (which is good in moderation).
- Depending on the situation, try holding special days and such, such as a game day (it's best to try to reserve ahead of time a few classrooms to set up consoles in, and also be SURE you have approval before attempting it), live action day, and well... other such stuff. Put a bit of variety into it.
- Snacks. This may require people to pay a membership fee, but it does keep some people coming. Snacks should usually be minimal in order to keep with the budget (i.e. bag of chips, 2-liter of soda/pop, and make sure to buy a massive bulk of disposible cups). Try not to spend more than $5 on snacks per meeting.

That's at least what comes to mind at the moment. I may think of a few more later. Good luck.

Our club meets every friday from 7pm-12 or whenever. One thing I would suggest is to find like minded people as yourself at your school who would also like to see an anime club. Make these people your officers because running a club can be quite an involved process.

You'll want to have a solid schedule of anime that will be shown and make sure to stick to the list. We have made the mistake of booting the list to watch whatever we want. While the anime was good, people who may come to watcch only one of ther series your showing may not be happy with changing your schedule around. Of course all anime shown ought to be unlicensed subs, or if the show is licensed then you MUST have the dvds.

In order to breed friendship in the club, we always leave around 11pm and go eat japanese food and drink boba. The place we go is open nearly all night so we stay out till we want to go to sleep.

We also have 3 marathons per semester. The 1st to kick off the semester, the 2nd after the mid-terms, and the 3rd after finals. Those usually go from 7pm to 7am, sometimes with a break in the middle to sing karaoke to wake people up ^___^. If your club is large enough i suggest contacting pepsi and other distributors and ask for donations of drinks/food, many times they are happy to pimp their products.

Oh, and our name is Societas Anime.

You could have contests. Like anime drawing contests or trivia pursuit or something in that fashion. Possibly if you can afford it to have prizes on the line to get your group wanting to do it a little more. But hey, it's up to you mate and thumbs-up with the smiling face of my avatar.

Sorry, just thought of this one.
You should also talk about this website and that way if people wanted to talk after the anime club is over or on off days they can use the chat system (which I hardly ever see anyone that is actually chatting.). Probably should talk about other websites too. If a person likes a certain show you should tell them of a website they can go to to get great information of the anime and talk to other fans of that show. And again it's up to you, Thumbs up with the smile of my avatar.
