Have you guys noticed that some companies are using some cheap cases for their anime? People who bought Cowboy Bebop Remix 1 know what I'm talking about. Some light, flexible, smelly peace of crap case!
I first noticed crappy cases when I got Blue Gender The Warrior. Then Dragonball GT Hero's Legacy and other DBGT FUNimation releases did it so I thought it was strictly a FUNimation thing until Cowboy Bebop Remix came out. The DVD has a shiny cover and slipcase cover but it doesn't have an insert or a good DVD case. That really pissed me off because I wanted the ultimate Bebop editions in their good cases, like the ones with the Escaflowne Movie, Jin-Roh, and Yojimbo, and got some cheap ass case! Whats up with that?
Is there anything WE can do like send a complaint to their main office in order to stop this? If THEY expect $30 msrp from us, WE should expect a good case to hold that $30 piece of plastic in.

Bandai's cases are widely agreed upon to be the worst out of any of the major licensors. I've gotten two copies of Planetes 1 so far which have had loose discs that came off of the holder and became scratched.

Odd, the case for mine is doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

By whom? When it comes to DVD cases, quite often you will see several variations of cases used, even between volumes of the same series. Bandai's cases are no better or worse then cases used by any other company. (Comparing the same type of case head-to-head). DVDs fall out of the holder all the time. That's the result of rough treatment during shipment, and has happened to me from DVDs I've bought from every company, anime wise, and normal Hollywood movies as well. It's just a fact of life.

Good point with the Cowboy Bebop REMIX 1 DVD. I thought it was supposed to be an 'ultimate' edition of the series, and the actual packaging was crap. Besides the case, no booklet included. I was very disappointed to say the least.

I've never had any problems with any official releases when it comes to DVDs falling out of their holders. However, I wish the Princess Mononoke DVD came with a bit more substance to the case insert, which basically was a front and back of very little info. One of the better cases I've gotten is the one for the R.O.D. OVA, in which everything fit snugly and none of the inserts were falling out.

Aren't you supposed to buy DVDs for the ANIME? Screw the packaging; as long as it holds and protects your discs, don't worry about it. Sometimes anime fans can be so nitpicky.

Yeah but the thing is, we also pay for something that looks presentable. I wouldn't want the printing on my DVDs peeling off or anything, even if it's the show that matters.

I was about to watch Gundam 0080 and noticed it has a similar crappy case and I remember when I bought it the first disc was loose in the case.
Yeah they, the cases, MIGHT, not always, do their job but I have a DVD player in my truck and I own a loptop so I watch DVDs on the road a lot. In fact, these last couple of days I've only been home to sleep (Helping friend with his wedding this saturday). I take my DVDs with me and dont want cases that crack with a little pressure. On the DBGT movie I rememeber I was driving and had to brake hard and the DVD, along with other three, flew from the passenger seat to the ground. The side of the case cracked and everytime I opened the case, the cracked part looked like it was touching/scratching the actual DVD. Thats when I first noticed the cases were very flexible, smelly, and just flat out cheap.
I like the Bandai cases that lock the DVDs in place like in s-CRY-ed and others named on my first topic so I have never had a problem with Bandai until Cowboy Bebop Remix. If we just roll over and accept the crappy cases it just may lead to more stuff being cut back on. For example many DVDs today dont even come with inserts. FUNimation does a good job with FMA and Samurai 7 they have good inserts and I'm not dissappointed when I open the nice case with a great insert. I payed the same for Cowboy Bebop Remix and FMA so shouldnt I expect the same quality from both?

Distributors get cases at bulk rate therefore it's whatever is available from their suppliers, unless they special order a case for promotional reasons like a tin case. I trust you are not fiddling with a dvd case, let alone even watching a DVD whilst driving down the motorway at speed in your truck.

No I don't watch anime while I drive . I have a two hour break and a one hour break during my college classes so I try to not get bored, when I don't have homework, mainly by watching movies and anime is a great pass-time. In fact today I finally got to watch Samurai Seven.
Anyway yeah they buy them in bulk and all I'm saying is that they are cutting back on good DVD cases so obviously they can save money because the DVDs still cost $29.99. If the DVDs were cheaper priced with cheaper cases I wouldn't mind at all. But we get cheap cases at same price. Im just wondering what else they'll cut back on in order to save even more money.

Well these are tough times in the economy and profit margins are getting squeezed thin. Reduced episode count would be one way to save margin. Would you rather have a nice case but less content on the disk then?

Mohawk has a point I've seen good cases with less stuff on the dvd (pretty much just the show) and I've seen bad case but alot of extra goodies on the dvd. You cowboy bebop remix does that come with alot of extras for a so-called cheap case? And most excellent cases are used for promotional reason, like a limited edition or special edition which normally come with alot of extras or what appears to be alot of extras.

How does an the presence, or lack thereof, of an insert have one thing to do with the quality of the case? It has none. You can have a "crappy" case with a huge ass booklet, and a nice case with nothing, or a one-page insert.

Well, the presence or lack of presence of inserts does fit in the conversation which has swung a little bit towards production costs and methods to shave a little off those costs. I think the bulk of the production costs though are voice work and even more is the licensing costs. I doubt inserts would matter much as far as production costs go, and I imagine the case quality would matter even less. Even high quality DVD cases aren't even a dollar.
