Damn, all that's left to do is to tie this project all in somehow with the United Nations and TACMARS and then the New World Order conspiracy theory wackos will have their proof that the current niche popularity of manga is a prime component of the One World Government über-conspiracy.

Will the manga address the fact that some of the World Bank's own policies contribute to poverty, or the fact that the U.S.A. (with 16.4% of total votes) can, in effect, veto any major changes to the bank's policies?
I think it is a good idea to have manga cover issues as complex as world poverty, HIV/AIDS, etc. However, I believe that having the World Bank as a partner puts it in a conflict of interest. Reference: WikiPedia |

...interesting...
one question: who's drawing? I think this is interesting as a manga subject; i mean, Viz usually doesn't really release stuff like this. Plus, the fact that the goal of the manga is education (or progaganda or whatever you want to call it, but i'd like to call it education) is interesting because there are few non-entertainment-aimed manga out there, especially in the twenty-first century. |

I just know I''d love to see the CFP they circulated to get the manga companies to bid on this. Ah, World Bank Institute, a new day...a new way to waste taxpayer money.
But then again, if the Pentagon can do America's Army, the WB sure as hell can do this! Incidentally, their in-house gift/convenience shop is one of the most bizarre places I've ever been to. ...and their cafeteria - one of the most awesome ^^;;; |

This is ALMOST as bad as Harmony Gold using the UN to promote their next Robotech series.

1. "Emo" is usually used in context with a musical style, isn't it? Just wondering, that's usually how I see it used... 2.This summary:
is a bit misleading for that one; the whole series is exactly what it sounds like from the title - confessions from (supposedly) real teenage girls, made into manga stories of 1-2 chapters by the manga-ka. It's all stuff like teen suicide and prostitution... 3. I believe they were commenting on the fact that a lot of things covered by this new World Bank/Viz manga are also covered in CC. I'm sure there's a chapter in there somewhere about HIV, and at least one relating to pverty, though most of them seem to be things like "OMG MY BEST FRIEND KILLED HERSELF, AND I WAS SUICIDAL BUT NOW I'M NOT BUT OMG NOTHING HAS MEANING AND NOBODY GIVES A CRAP WHEN YOU DIE AND I THINK WE'LL STOP TELLING THE STORY NOW JUST TO FRUSTRATE THE READER OMG" (Can you tell I was annoyed with the first volume? The second volume's not bad, though, but it got too preachy for me in general, so I decided to stop buying it. Hey, If anybody wants to buy volume one reeeal cheap from me, lemme know. I'm only keeping volume 2). Coincidentally, for the most part CC seems an awful lot like an afterschool special in manga form. Which brings me to... 4. Maybe they were commenting on how hard it is not to be preachy when it comes to those subjects. CC managed to do pretty good with sexual harrassment (for a nice change, we saw something that preaches that girls should tell People if they're being sexually harassed but ALSO know that not all men are pigs and some of them find the pervy ones just as disgusting as the women do; not many people note the latter part that i've seen, which surprises me, because there's a tendency to not realize that men can be nice, too :? )... but from what I've seen in the first few volumes, it IS a bit preachy-ish. And godawfully depressing at points. And frustrating in a lot of others. ANd sometimes just plain overdramatic. If you like nice art and depressing stories about cutters and teen suicide, you might find it a guilty pleasure, but I tend to like a bit more fun and/or substance to my manga. Though I will grant Reiko Momochi one thing: like I said, the art is quite pretty. I find it a tad weird that the World Bank is getting into comic book propganda. Though it does make one think - apparently manga is more popular than some would give it credit for. Here's something interesting to note...
Aww, how nice of... but wait!
Interesting that none of these "noteworthy" charities are actually noted. And who would PAY for this stuff? Although this is sounding less and less like CC and more and more like a martial arts film:
(Oh, yeah, that's original)
Yeah. We've never seen THAT before, either.
So, in other words, our little generically-named hero is either uneducated or just plain stupid.
Or you know, just like half the other heroes out there. I dunno. If the writer is good enough, it could work... but it sounds awful cliche so far. -Andromeda |

This all reminds of the days when schools would get comic books that teached social problems.
Superman and Batman vs hunger http://www.nealadams.com/DC/heroesagainsthunger.html Spider-man vs second hand smoke! http://www.spiderfan.org/cgi-bin/cover.pl?80123,spiderman_social_acs,smokescreen.jpg Well, I always found them nostalgic and always remembered them. I can bet they never convinced 99% of the readers what they already knew. But it's always fun to see what kinda creative ways new messages can be reached no matter how goofy. |

Emo is also often used to refer to people, especially teenagers that don't fit in with society, are depressed, suicidial, dramatic, etc. Alot of anime/manga characters commonly fit the bill there. However this "original" manga Viz is producing, from the introduction given in the press release sounds more like a shonen manga since the main character is an orphan (very common in shonen) and wants to be "the greatest fighter in the world" (been there). The only twist here is that the focus isnt really on fighting at all, instead of developing the main characters abilites at fighting, its developing his maturity and awareness of the world, and growing as a person. The whole typical fighter/shonen fluff they throw at you from the intro is just a cover-up of whats really a self-discovery manga thats more focused on character development and problems in the real world and how they affect people, and things that can be done to better them. Now that I think about it, it's kinda like GTO in that sense. One expects GTO to be all about fanservice, crude language, violence and other good shiz, but it's really all about the character(s) and real life school problems. |

I couldn't help but finally join in because this is really a crucial issue and I just had to voice my thoughts. Japan is only a Junior member in the NWO... The primary members are EU, Russia, China, and then the US (when it's fully a police state). The popularity of manga is only being abused so that when people learn the truth, they will have something to bash...mainly manga and anime...instead of the pornographic Hollywood movies being exported around the world which are conditioning our children to violence. Already I've read some Americans linking the Pokemon epilepsy incident to Japanese Illuminati mind-control techniques, not recognizing that their counterpart Illuminati are already way ahead. Furthermore, Japanese citizens are more well-read in these "conspiracy theories" because the media censorship in the U.S. is already that strong. The U.N. is already under talks to have 3 world currencies...the US Dollar, the Euro, and the Yen, after a global financial collapse then it will just be ONE world currency based on the gold standard. I am absolutely appalled that a heinous genocide-financing monster such as the World Bank will use one of my favorite mediums for its propaganda. It, along with its fellow globalist organizations who created the very plagues and are now asking more of our taxpayer money to eradicate. Please, support only authors who draw manga for arts' sake and to entertain, not to indoctrinate. We are already aware of the world issues through snippets and metaphors and fables and allegory found in literature, we do not need anything so blatantly propagandic.[/i] |

There are anime and manga made for educational purposes too, same goes for cartoons and comics. It doesnt always have to be for art and entertainment, and things like metaphors, fables and symbolism just don't cut it, ya gotta be more direct and to the point. |
