Hmm.... I wonder how this will influence the european anime and manga market, specially the german.
The German Anime and Manga market grew extremly in the last two years. By the way, Shueisha/VIZ and Tokyopop annouced a big joint venture a couple of weeks ago for the german market.... |

Yeah, me too. We already get some series earlier than the US, f.e. Nana (graphic novels, 1-4) and 20th Century Boys (volumes 1-11), and also series that aren't published in the US at all, f.e. Kaguya Hime.
And the German graphic novels are even cheaper than the American, in most cases. Well, it's good news I guess... |

From what I gather, the Amsterdam based company VIZ Media BV is not a publisher, but a agency that enables VIZ to sell the rights of its properties to actual publishers. Damn, and here I was hoping VIZ would actually release stuff in my country
@Smutchi: Seeing as most triple A titles are alreasy bought by juggernauts such as Carlsen, Glenat and Dargaud/Kana - VIZ would be facing the same problem as Tokyopop did in Germany (only a handful of titles from their US lineup remained available). I can see the need for a partnership here. Can you tell me more about the Tokyopop/VIZ/Shueisha thing? This could mean a lot for the European market, especially for countries like Holland, that have been really shafted when it comes to manga releases... |

The Tokyopop/VIZ/Shueisha thing basically means that Tokyopop is going to be the exclusive German publisher for any Shueisha titles... There are also Shueisha series being published by other German companies, f.e. "Banzai!" (simliar to Shounen Jump) which belongs to Carlsen. The official press release (in German) says that their new strategy isn't going to have any influence on these titles. And the best news? We're going to have Death Note soon!! |
