I was reading a few forums a few nights ago until I found this.
I was a bit skeptical about this until someone posted this link. Here. Did anyone else catch this? |

Wow, I didn't realize Kahn was racist. He's basically telling black people "Screw you, you don't deserve to be on TV," or "OH NOZ! IT'S A BLACK MAN!! RUN!!!" Loser/a-hole. And what's up with censoring the word "marines"? OMG!!! THEY FIGHT IN WARS AND USE GUNS!!! KIDS WILL BE TRAUMATIZED!!!111
Yet more reasons why 4Kids must be shut down. Kahn has shown that he is stupid enough to change the race of a character just because he feels a certain way towards them. I feel that is wrong and unjust, and I think 4Kids should have a lawsuit filed against them for that BS. This company continues to plague the anime industry with it's "cartoons are for kids" mentality and must be shut down. Seriously. This is ridiculous. |

I think it has more to do with the guy being seen as a bit too much of a racial stereotype. I don't think it would have caused any problems for them, but I can kinda see their point. And they changed Marines to Navy since it makes a whole lot more sense that way. Maybe you should be asking why Oda would do something as silly as call a Navy fleet the Marines? Emerje (edit because you added more)
Jesus, you make it sound like Al Khan supervises the production of every single episode of every single show he produces. Just because someone on his payrole turned a black guy into a white guy doesn't make him the racist. If you have a problem with it take it up with the One Piece brand manager, they're the one that makes the decisions on these things. They've done several anime titles featuring several black characters (just look at Shaman King), this is an isolated incident, if he was really a racist then this wouldn't have been the first time. As for the '"cartoons are for kids" mentality' aren't these cartoons for kids? I'm not going to get into a big "One Piece isn't a kids show" fight with you, it's been done to death and in the end it doesn't really matter. Emerje |

Wow. You know, the idea that it was changed in order to not reflect a racial sterotype might be true. When I saw the picture it did kinda remind me of African characters in those old black and white cartoons. If you've ever seen those cartoons all the African characters were drawn very tall, skinny, with big lips and round heads. So it's entirely possible, in fact the most likely situation, that the character in One Piece was changed so it would not reflect those old cartoons.
Oda is actually correct in using the word Marines, and 4Kids is correct in using Navy. The Navy refers to a fleet of ships and the personnel who run them, like the captain and the crew. The Marines are the soldiers who actually fight on the ships or on land. The Marines in One Piece are seen fighting on land and on the ships with guns and swords and not just crew members who run the ships. So Oda is correct in using Marines to refer to the soldiers (but not the ships), and 4Kids is correct in using Navy to refer to the ships (but not the soldiers). |

Because that's the way he had it, and it should have stayed that way. Really though, they DO act as the marines much of the time, fighting in land battles and the such. They are in many ways "navy", but that's not the way Oda wrote it, and Oda is the law.
In Shaman King they changed Chocolove's name to "Joko" or something.
While that is the distinction that the US millitary runs under, the terms could be used interchangably outside the US millitary structure, and this show is decidedly NOT in the United States. |

Shaman King is also aired later at night around 8PM and One Piece is aired in the morning around 8AM where there are likely to be more kids watching and the adults supervising their kids(does that still occur in this day and age?) |

It's not just the US. The Marines first appeared in Ancient Greece as people who shot arrows and threw spears from the ships. From there France, Holland, Spain, and Britan added soliders who specialized in close quarters combat aboard their ships in the 17th and 18th century. Then the US and Japan expanded that idea to include amphibious battle tactics when the two were rivals in the Pacific Ocean before and during WWII. So the idea of the Marines is universal, and the idea of soliders who fight on land and on the sea was first developed by Japan and the US. So the words cannot be used interchangably no matter where you are. But this is a children's show, so maybe the one term is used to make it more ejoyable, and less like the actual military, to the ones who watch it. |

Yeah, but if you had ONE millitary force, and they all went by a single name, and they were mostly made up of solid combat soldiers, and they had ships to carry them around because the world is like 90% water, could you call that force "the Marines"? Could you call it "the Navy"? I think both could be considered appropriate, just as there are naval and army aircraft pilots, navel soldiers (seals), airforce special forces, etc. Oda chose the Marines, I don't see where it's 4Kids' place to override that. |

Honestly some of the edits just confuse the hell out of me. I'm doing an edit list right now, it's for an earlier episode which were supposed to be the lightest on edits, and they changed it so that the town's mayor doesn't get on his knees and beg for some bandits not to hurt Luffy... Some other really awkward edits: erasing ENGLISH text, changing facial expressions, erasing angry veins and sweatdrops, making it so that peoples' swords are shorter, editing scratches off of peoples' faces, heck, they even erased some shading in a few episodes... On Fox Box on Saturday mornings they air opposite each other (10:30 and 11am EST). Shaman King IS edited, but not as much. As I've mentioned in another topic (and a little in this one) this probably has more to do with the discretion of each shows brand manager than 4Kids policy. Also it's more difficult to make drastic changes to a prominent character in Shaman King than it is to change a background support character in One Piece (not to mention wholly unnecessary).
