I saw this in my University Anime Club back in the day, and it may have been that poorly-done fansub but I remember enjoying it immensely and am delighted to see it get some love. Thank you, Justin!! Very Happy

I think I saw this fansub on youtube. My first thought was umm... ok but I enjoyed it in the end.

To be fair, the show might look like a hard sell. Ostensibly a parody of Ashita no Joe (though I don't think anybody would need even a fleeting familiarity with the seminal series to enjoy it)

I can testify to that. Still have never seen _Ashita no Joe_, but I found BTS hilarious.

It's sad that "Blazing Transfer Student" isn't in this country. I think it would do well here. By the looks of it,it could be a fun anime to watch. I think I could like it.

He was also the original character designer (Hiroshi Osaka then adapted them for TV) for G Gundam which is also out of print since Bandai Ent. closed down.

I can't remember if I've seen this one fully through or not, there's a bunch of "tuffpunk kids fightin in school" anime out there, especially low budget ones from the early 90s. So it being tied to Gainax may be its only selling point.

I love the look of this show sooo much! Huge sideburns and jerky movement and big fat lines-- be still my heart! It's such a shame that GAINAX seems to want to forget that it exists. They returned to a really similar pool of imagery in their Anime Tenchou advertisement!

If I imagine the OAV to have the same Parody type feel of Inferno-cop, I may have to get this show a watch.

Shimamoto described how it was created in a semi-autobiographical Aoi Honō; I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for an English release, though.

I think you mean Moeyo Pen, which had the chapter about the creation of BTS (under a different name, of course); Aoi Honou is the prequel to Moeyo Pen, detailing Shimamoto's life before he hit it big.

Anyway, Blazing Transfer Student is probably one of my absolute favorite anime shorts of all time. While some people are quick to state that "over-the-top = parody" as a way to downplay or insult titles that are over-the-top, BTS is an actual parody... A loving one at that, since Shimamoto loves this kind of stuff. The entire production is simply amazing, and it's a shame that it's joke-worthy production history of originally being a laserdisc-exclusive anime ("Original Laser Animation", or OLA, as it was advertised) has resulted in it being seemingly disowned by GAINAX & Pony Canyon, neither of which acknowledge the anime on their websites.

Oh neat, this guy did the Skull Man manga? Awesome! Now, I didn't like the anime much, which completely ignored anything about the manga and decided instead to be a giant hidden prequel to the point where it barely had any of the same characters and none of the same story, but the manga had all this awesome paneling in it that made it just so damn much fun to read!

The first anime I saw, besides LoGH which was also on Laserdisc.
God, my childhood was an awesome one.

It's a pretty charming show to the point where it's been parodied and referenced numerous times. The ones I can name off the top of my head without finding my file with lists that I've seen the opening scene in would be Akane Maniax (when Gouda first arrives) and the Dragonaut OVA.

There might've been more but I'm not bothering looking it up. I might actually dig it my old copy now. Great. Laughing
